Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended for Bangladesh’s two-Test series against Bangladesh. After announcing his decision to return to Test cricket having retired from the format last year.
During the third ODI in the recently concluded series against Bangladesh, Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players Support Personnel. It relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”
Bangladesh took the series 2-1 after winning the contest by four wickets. The incident occurred in the 37th over of the game when Hasaranga snatched his cap from the Umpires, mocking the umpiring in the match.
Winner of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Match
The match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was won by Sri Lanka in the T20. It was their last T20 series before heading to the T20I World Cup.
Hasaranga, who is the captain of the Sri Lanka T20 side might have missed the first matches in the T20 World Cup if he had not returned to Test cricket.
Sri Lankan Players Shocked
Sri Lankan cricket was shocked as all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga received a suspension from the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. The suspension comes hot on the heels of his decision to return to Test cricket after retiring from the format last year.
Receiving Demerit Points
The all-rounder had previously received demerit points during the third T20I against Afghanistan last month. It resulted in a suspension for two T20Is against Bangladesh.
Consequently, Hasaranga will sit out of the ICC World Test Championship Tests against Bangladesh.
With the recent addition of demerit points, Hasaranga surpassed the threshold, leading to a ban from two Tests or four limited-overs internationals, whichever comes first.
Haranga Retired from Test Cricket
Notably, Hasaranga had already retired from Test Cricket in August 2023 at the age of 26. Showing a desire for greater availability in franchise cricket tournaments. He stepped away from the longer format after just four matches. He had a decent batting average of 28.00. On the other hand, he managed to take only four wickets. Hasranga is also set to represent SRH in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. SRH bought him for Rs 1.5 crore from RCB in the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai.
