Blake Snell Tosses 1st Career No-Hitter

San Francisco Giants riding high as of late.

Blake Snell just finished off his first career no-hitter in the San Francisco Giants 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. It was also his first career complete game shutout. Snell tallied 11 strikeouts and yielded three walks in Friday night’s 114-pitch no-no. After a rocky start to his season, Snell has turned it around in the past month. Over his last four starts, Snell has pitched 24 innings, only giving up two total runs.

Blake Snell was in trade talks up until the trade deadline. The Giants currently are a few games back of the final playoff spot in the National League in a jam-packed wild card race. San Francisco decided to keep Snell in hopes of a late-season playoff push. Tonight, they are glad that they didn’t trade him away. The Giants have now won six of their last seven games and have a record of 55-56.

Blake Snell is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and has some of the nastiest stuff out of any pitcher in Major League Baseball. He had it all going Friday night. He walked three batters within the first five innings but then retired the last 12 Reds hitters in a row. Tyler Fitzgerald’s home run and RBI double and Casey Schmitt’s solo homer provided all of the offense Blake Snell and the Giants would need.

Not only was it Snell’s first no-hitter, it was also his first complete game. Never before had he gone the distance. Even with his pitch count over 100 after eight frames, Giants Manager Bob Melvin gave Snell the nod to go out for the ninth inning. He retired all three Cincinnati hitters on six pitches in the ninth. The last pitch was against superstar Shortstop Elly de la Cruz, who lined out to Right Fielder Mike Yastrzemski to end the game. It was the first no-hitter by a Giant since 2015.

Snell Giving Giants Playoff Hope

It has been a mediocre season for the San Francisco Giants. Coming off 81 and 79-win seasons, they spent a lot of money in the offseason to get them over the hump and into the playoffs. It has not worked out how exactly they pictured as they are still on the outside looking in. Blake Snell turning into the lights-out pitcher has been the jolt they needed to get back into the thick of the playoff race and to fire up a fanbase that has been waiting for some excitement for a long time.

It can’t be stated enough that in the long run, pitching is what wins baseball games when it gets late in the season. Every team you see deep in the playoffs has a pitching staff that is nails. If Blake Snell and the rest of the San Francisco pitching staff keep rolling and they get timely hitting, they are absolutely a team that can get in the playoffs.
