This BKFC Champ Will Donate Her Brain to Science

BKFC Champ to Donate Her Brain: Christine Ferea

BKFC Champion Christine Ferea took part in a medical test years before when she was just starting her career. She was struggling financially at the time, so she accepted the brain scan so she could get a few hundred dollars to support herself. She didn’t know anything about the test she was going to go through because her goal was to get the money. Little did she know that the study involving brain scans would give her very important knowledge. That is why she has remained in the program, returning to her doctors every year to ensure that her brain is still fit to compete in combat sports.

Christine Ferea has such passion for this study that she is already planning to donate her brain for research after she is dead. This is because there are thousands of things that doctors would only come to discover after the death of the patient. For instance, the condition popularly known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE can only be diagnosed through tests that are carried out during an autopsy.

Christine Ferea showed her determination to donate her brain in these words: “I definitely will give my brain to the study. It’s not like I need to keep it or anyone else needs to keep it.”

Heather Hardy Brain Injury

Ferea was scheduled to fight former boxing champion and Bellator fighter Heather Hardy for the BKFC title. However, Hardy withdrew from it just days before the fight, and the reason for that was her noggin. She claimed that her career came to an end due to the effects of the blows that she suffered to her head in the course of her career.

Ferea expressed her thoughts about the Hardy situation and said, “It’s very, very scary. I’m the type of person, I have a chin so I can take a lot of damage. I’ll sit there and take it like whatever, it doesn’t affect me. That’s the kind of fighter Heather was. She’ll take a lot of damage because she has a lot of heart and a high pain tolerance. That puts you in check in terms of being tough and just taking a shot.”

Possible Retirement

Christine Ferea has made it clear that her concentration on long-term brain health has not influenced the way she performs because that will be detrimental to her career. But the 41-year-old has established with everyone thinking about her continuing or retiring that if she ever finds out that her mental condition is not in order, she will quit fighting immediately.
