An abysmal performance for the Buffalo Bills, who struggled mightily in the first half of their Week 5 AFC clash against the Houston Texans. While the game was highly anticipated as a showdown between the Bills offense and WR Stefon Diggs, it turned out to be a tale of two halves for the Bills. The Texans got the better of the Bills, winning on a last-second Kai Fairbairn field goal to send Buffalo on a two-game losing streak.
Abysmal Offensive Production
The Buffalo Bills offense looked abysmal throughout the game. QB Josh Allen struggled to begin the game, going one of nine to begin the game. The main issue was Buffalo’s wide receivers lacking separation. Houston’s defense did a phenomenal job with their coverage; combined with disguised blitzes, the Texans were able to cause the Bills to punt five times in the first half. In total, wide receivers were targeted eighteen times throughout the game. Missed opportunities on throws to Keon Coleman and Mack Hollins caused Buffalo’s offense to put up an abysmal three points in the first half.
Tale of Two Halves
The first half of Buffalo’s week five performance was abysmal for Buffalo’s defense. The defense gave up two easy touchdowns, one on a rushing touchdown from RB Cam Akers who went untouched into the endzone, and a sixty-seven-yard Nico Collins touchdown bomb from QB C.J. Stroud to put Houston up by two possessions. After the play, WR Nico Collins was taken into the locker room and was quickly ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Buffalo’s defense buckled down in the second half, creating two turnovers. DE Duwaune Smoot knocked out the ball from C.J. Stroud, with LB Dorian Williams scooping up the fumble. Later in the game, LB Terrel Bernard, who returned to the field after missing three games, intercepted a pass intended for WR Stefon Diggs. Second-half adjustments in the second half have been the key for Buffalo this season. Penalties were one of the biggest reasons the offense struggled in the first half; however, in the second half, the team committed one penalty.
Overall, the game’s main focus was Stefon Diggs’ revenge against his former team, the Buffalo Bills. Diggs finished the day with six receptions for eighty-two yards. After the game, Josh Allen and Diggs exchanged a quick handshake. The Bills have not won in Houston since November 18th, 2006. Some memorable losses include postseason losses and multiple abysmal endings with pick-sixes to clinch wins for the Texans.
Final Thoughts
Buffalo moves on to an important Week 6 AFC East Monday night football showdown against the New York Jets. The Jets offense struggled in London against the Minnesota Vikings, losing 23-17. Losing to the Vikings caused the Jets to move to 2-3 on the season. Buffalo will look to get back on track after two abysmal offensive performances. The Bills are hopeful to get WR Khalil Shakir, DT Ed Oliver, and CB Taron Johnson back from injuries.
