Six-time Super Bowl-winning Head Coach Bill Belichick interviewed for the head coach opening at the University of North Carolina according to multiple reports. It has been reported that Belichick is interested in returning to coaching in 2025, but taking a job within the college ranks was not projected to be his path. He is reportedly open to interviewing at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Widely considered the greatest coach in NFL history, Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways after 24 years in January 2024. He struggled at the helm in three seasons without Tom Brady. The Tar Heels job is open after UNC fired Head Coach Mac Brown last week as the team finished the regular season 6-6. This is Belichick’s first official interview of the 2024 hiring cycle. Will he fit in well at the college level, or is a return to the NFL imminent?

Belichick expressed an interest to return to the NFL following his departure from the New England Patriots, but only received one head coaching interview during the cycle. The Atlanta Falcons were the only team to bring in the all-time great coach for an official interview. Atlanta ultimately decided to hire Raheem Morris to be the team’s next head coach.
Belichick reportedly received offers as well from both the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers in a high-profile assistant coach role. He rebuked the offers and decided to spend the year with his foil for many decades: The media. The head coach is a recurring guest on the “Manningcast,” “Inside the NFL,” and has his own podcast. He can also be seen in commercials for Underdog Fantasy. After a career of loathing the media, and going out of his way to give them no information, he has jumped head-first into his multiple media ventures.
Final Thoughts
If Belichick takes the job at UNC or any other college program, it would be the first college coaching job of his illustrious career. He is no stranger to college coaching as his father, Steve, was a long-time assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy. After a tough tenure without Tom Brady, success in college could be what Belichick needs as he looks to cap off one of the best coaching careers in the history of the sport.
