This was fully on display in his loss to Shelton, wherein he could never seem to find a rhythm.

And the 21-year-old American made full use of it. His game, driven by an aggressive forehand and a strong serve, included 8 aces against Schmiedlova, the boyfriend. He was aggressive in the way he had shown the world the promise that he had in him at the run last year in the semifinals. The match got started at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and Thiem was put to a stern test already in the first set. Though he battled, he could not push off Shelton’s constant pressure. When two break points arrived in the 10th game, Thiem had to save them, which indeed he did, but a few points later, he finally yielded as Shelton broke his serve.

He pounced on various mistakes—a double fault from Thiem, an unforced error from his opponent—that landed him the second break in the second set. Still, Thiem tried his best, but the dominance of Shelton was for all to see. The third was a disrupted set, and Shelton was everywhere to be found. He chalked up 34 wins against the listless Thiem to display his awesome power and precision. The performance of Ben Shelton simply spoke volumes about his being tournament-ready, and he will now meet Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round.
