Ben Shelton Gives Former US Open Winner Farewell in Round 1

Ben Shelton

Dominic Thiem played his final match in the first round, where he got booted from the court, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 by Ben Shelton. Defeat means this is the end of Thiem’s career at Flushing Meadows, as he made his breakthrough by winning a Grand Slam title in that very place four years ago. Thiem’s career has hit further hurdles from a niggling wrist injury, while his previous form had been erratic throughout the year. This was fully on display in his loss to Shelton, wherein he could never seem to find a rhythm.

And the 21-year-old American made full use of it. His game, driven by an aggressive forehand and a strong serve, included 8 aces against Schmiedlova, the boyfriend. He was aggressive in the way he had shown the world the promise that he had in him at the run last year in the semifinals. The match got started at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and Thiem was put to a stern test already in the first set. Though he battled, he could not push off Shelton’s constant pressure. When two break points arrived in the 10th game, Thiem had to save them, which indeed he did, but a few points later, he finally yielded as Shelton broke his serve.

Shelton Gaining in Confidence

As the match wore on, Ben Shelton gained more confidence. He pounced on various mistakes—a double fault from Thiem, an unforced error from his opponent—that landed him the second break in the second set. Still, Thiem tried his best, but the dominance of Shelton was for all to see. The third was a disrupted set, and Shelton was everywhere to be found. He chalked up 34 wins against the listless Thiem to display his awesome power and precision. The performance of Ben Shelton simply spoke volumes about his being tournament-ready, and he will now meet Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round.

Thiem in Emotional Goodbye

The defeated Thiem lingered around afterward, signing memorabilia and mingling with the crowd. He said he was grateful, even after defeat, for having had a chance to compete in his final U.S. Open match on the sport’s most iconic court. Thiem reflected upon the surreal setting of his 2020 title, which he won in front of empty stands because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For Ben Shelton, the feeling of competing on one of the game’s most iconic courts, Arthur Ashe Stadium, was one to remember. There is not much better atmosphere than being here at Ashe, said Shelton. Seeded in at such a prestigious venue, he could never have been happier to get underway and is all the more desperate to keep going in the competition.
His legacy will be built upon his victory at the U.S. Open in 2020, but more upon his career with big highs and tough lows. Thiem’s last match showed his never-say-die spirit that he had dedicated to the game he most loved.
