Bellingham is a player for big games. Not only was he a pivotal squad member during Real Marid’s Champions League campaign, and ultimate UWCL win against Borussia Dortmund, but he is one of the leading men in the England squad. Southgate narrowed down the extensive England list to a select few who would represent the country in the Euros, and fortunately, he chose Bellingham.
England faced off against Serbia just yesterday in what fans thought would be an easy win. But, Jude’s header proved to be the only goal that gave England the much-needed three points to sit at the top of the table and (hopefully) progress onto the next round.
Bellingham’s Header Proves to be the Deciding Goal
Bellingham hit the back of the net in the first half off of a lovely cross to give England the needed three points to start off the Euros 2024 in the best way possible. Playing in Germany on June 16th, England faced off against an unknown Serbian side they had never played before – and it showed. They were unable to find the net again and had a few hairy moments against them that could have seen the game end in a 1-1 draw.
Bellingham’s header was a powerful strike that shows just how capable he is within sniffing distance of the goal. Saka, the Gunners winger who had a fantastic Premier League season, floated in a beautiful cross that took a lucky deflection off of a Serbian defender and landed right near Bellingham’s head for him to nod home.
Bellinhgma’s powerful strike ended up putting England on the top of the table after Denmark drew with Slovenia earlier this week, earning them the number one spot before the second game. Bellingham proved to be a pivotal player for Southgate’s squad, as he set the tempo of the match, threaded passes, took shots, and scored the key goal that would see them come out the victors in their first match of the Euros.
In the game, England and Serbia were more even-matched than one would initially think. Serbia had six shots vs. England’s five throughout the game, showing just how even it was and how Serbia could have easily pulled one back against the likes of Pickford. England’s mere five shots on goal was the lowest they have had in an international tournament in quite some time.
But, Bellingham and the squad remained positive after the game. When asked if the low shots on goal number and the lack of domination by the team was worrying, Bellingham was quick to shrug off the concern.
‘I don’t agree with that. I think the first half shows why we can score goals against any team and the second half shows why we can keep a clean sheet against any team.’
England Going Forward in the Euros
Now, England faces off against Denmark on Thursday, while Serbia faces off against Slovenia. England will most likely have the same starting lineup, but they could also include more substitutions in this game. Last match, Jarrod Bowen came on as a sub and made a great impact going forward on the attacking side.
One thing that could worry England fans is the lack of cohesiveness with the back line, as Guehl and Trippier rarely play alongside one another.
