Belal Muhammad Intended to Retire with UFC 304 Loss

Belal Muhammad Intended to Retire

Belal Muhammad is now the Welterweight Champion of UFC. He fought Leon Edwards in UFC 304 and became the Champion. Belal has been struggling to get a chance to fight Leon Edwards and get a title shot for a long time. He almost struggled for a year to get the title shot but at last, he got the chance and came out victorious. Belal Muhammad has fought 27 fights until now and has won 24 of them but lost 3 of them. He has also started training with “The Eagle”, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and his team, which made enhanced his skills more.

Struggling to get a Title Shot

Muhammad Bilal Struggling

To be a UFC title holder is extremely hard and Getting a chance to fight for a UFC title is even harder. In short, it isn’t as simple as it used to be. In the past, winning eight fights in a row almost guaranteed a title shot. Even though the UFC CEO Dana White used to promote that a lot, he used to say that himself. There are examples of big champions like Max Holloway and Tony Ferguson who had to do more to get a shot at the undisputed championship.

Belal Muhammad and Others

Belal Muhammad is now 36 years old and his title shot was different from all of the Titleholders. He had a special situation where his long winning streak was interrupted by a no-contest against Leon Edwards in March 2021. Even with that, he remained unbeaten in 10 fights before winning the title in his rematch with Edwards by unanimous decision at UFC 304 last month. If “Remember the Name” had lost that fight, it might have been his last MMA match.

The fight between the challenger and the Champion was impressive as they showed their skills in the Octagon. Muhammad’s fight against Edwards was mostly one-sided. He used his powerful mix of aggressive striking and grappling to knock out his opponent. Even though it was a high-pressure situation, Belal Muhammad seemed very calm, even with the bright lights and the early hours in Manchester, England.

Upcoming fights of Belal Muhammad

Even though the first fight has a note because of the no-contest, there’s been no sign that a third fight between Belal Muhammad and Edwards is coming. Both White and Muhammad seem to prefer a match between Edwards and Ian Machado Garry. Other than that, Belal Muhammad was asked about his upcoming challenger.

His reply was different than what we expected, “Nobody deserves a title shot, right? So, I’m willing to fight any one of them. When Leon won the title, I was the clear next in line. Shavkat is [18-0] but it’s still like you didn’t have to go through the ladder that I had to go through. So, it’s not like, ‘Man, he 100 percent deserves it right away.’ I think name-wise, Usman has the biggest name in the division. Shavkat probably has the biggest aura about him.”
