BCB Seeks Army Assurance for T20 World Cup

Bangladesh,BCB

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is making all-out efforts to ensure the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup goes ahead as scheduled despite growing unrest in Bangladesh. Protests and an emergency imposed complicated things, with the government raising many questions over the safety and logistics involved in hosting the tournament. Against this backdrop of mishaps, the BCB has sought the vital help of Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman. The board asked for written guarantees regarding the safety of the players, officials, and spectators.

In the current scenario, unrest has taken over the entire region of Bangladesh, for which the interim government comes into the forefront under the able leadership of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. Amidst this turmoil, there is uncertainty looming over various national activities, including the Women’s T20 World Cup, slated to kick-start on 27 September.

The ICC is keeping a close eye on developments in Bangladesh. The ICC is now looking at holding the tournament at other venues, which will be in the same time zone as Bangladesh. This means that apart from India, the UAE and Sri Lanka will be the other sites under consideration. The international cricket body is ready to make a final decision on the venue for the T20 World Cup by August 10.

BCB Presses On T20 World Cup Despite Unrest

Even amidst the political turmoil and the resignation of some big names in the system—Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and some directors of BCB, for instance—final efforts are being made to ensure that the event goes ahead as scheduled. In such a scenario, there is no other option left for BCB officials, including chairman of the Umpire Committee Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu, but to carry on with their hard work.

BCB bosses have been consistently speaking to the ICC regarding the security situation and recently sent a formal request to the Army Chief, who, with the tournament only two months away, ‘strongly’ worded the letter. The board is awaiting a written assurance from the army, which they can present to the ICC.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is going to involve ten teams in 23 matches within 18 days. These are going to be held in two of the important cricket stadiums: Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Dhaka, and Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet. The smooth conduct of these matches depends a lot on the security arrangements that can be assured.

BCB’s T20 World Cup Plans

Difficulties notwithstanding, the BCB is determined to go ahead with the tournament. The board is keen to showcase Bangladeshi cricket prowess on the global scene, provided proper security measures are ensured. Things are still in flux; plans may change. If the BCB can get the necessary assurances, the Women’s T20 World Cup can go ahead, much to the delight of action-starved fans worldwide.

The predicament that BCB finds itself in today speaks well to a very glaring fact: the involvement of sport and politics. It is also a pointer to how an international event can be affected by national issues. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will go ahead and take place in Bangladesh or if any alternative plan will kick into action.
