Bayern Munich vs Freiburg: Preview

Vincent Kompany will look for a smoother experience in his first Bundesliga home game as Bayern Munich’s manager when they face Freiburg at Allianz Arena on Sunday. Bayern Munich secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg on August 25 and currently sit in sixth place with three points.

Freiburg, which is second with the same number of points, won 3-1 against Stuttgart on August 24. After a challenging 2023-24 season under Thomas Tuchel, where Bayern finished third and missed out on the league title for the first time in 12 years, fans were optimistic that Kompany’s summer overhaul would address the team’s defensive frailties.

Despite dominating possession against Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich conceded twice and allowed four significant chances while creating only three of their own. Bayern trailed 2-1 when Lovro Majer scored his second game goal in the 55th minute. However, Wolfsburg defender Jakub Kaminski’s goal leveled Bayern Munich’s score.

Harry Kane assisted Serge Gnabry, whose shot hit the post and crossed the line in the 82nd minute to secure the win. With this victory, Kompany has won his first two competitive games as Bayern’s manager, including a 4-0 triumph over Ulm on August 16 in the DFB-Pokal first round.

Bayern Munich has conceded nine goals in its last four league matches and has kept only two clean sheets in its past 17 Bundesliga games. Freiburg’s strong performance against Stuttgart—where it came from behind after an early goal from Ermedin Demirovic—saw Lukas Kubler and Ritsu Doan score to secure a 3-1 win. Freiburg managed to restrict Stuttgart to no significant chances despite having only 33% possession while creating four major opportunities from 16 shots.

Julian Schuster has also won his first two competitive matches in charge of Freiburg, including a 4-0 victory over Osnabruck in the DFB-Pokal on August 17. Freiburg’s win against Stuttgart ended a six-match winless streak in the Bundesliga, and a victory on Sunday would be their first away win in three league matches.
