The Bundesliga champions, who have been struggling to find their balance this season, drop points as they draw against Freiburg. Bayern Munich, who are still believed to be a title contender. Although a win was needed to reduce the point difference between them and the current league leaders Bayern Leverkusen.
The host side began and ended the match confidently. The Freiburg captain Christian Gunter gave them the lead, in the 12th minute with a powerful strike.
Bayern Munich vs SC Freiburg: Preview
Bayern Munich responded with an equalizing goal in the 35th minute of the match. And the goal came from Mathys Tel. The Bundesliga Liga’s highest goal scorer, Harry Kane missed a close-range opportunity as the match progressed. Jamal Musiala’s solo goal in the 75th minute was incredible. It seemed like it was going to secure a crucial victory for the visitors.
But then, Holer’s late heroics left the visitors stunned. The hopes of Tuchel’s side to lift the Bundesliga Liga title again are teetering. Especially with the crucial Champions League round-of-16 second-leg tie against Lazio coming up midweek.
The home team started with great determination and they were rewarded early in the match. The Bayern shot-stopper was forced to make a save from Ronald Sallai, he then hit the crossbar with an overhead kick, and the rebound fell to Gunter who struck the ball perfectly and gave the opening goal. Bayern picked up the pace and dominated the first half. In the 35th minute, Tel, who rarely starts due to Sane’s injury, made a brilliant move and smashed a powerful shot into the net. After halftime, Bayern continued to improve, with Atubolu making some great saves and Holer clearing Kane’s header off the line. Just when Bayern thought they had the win, Musiala showed incredible skill, weaving through defenders and curling a shot into the far post. But in the end, Holer’s fantastic volley gave Bayern Leverkusen a 7-point margin with a tendency to make it 10 points as they face FC Cologne on Sunday.
Tuchel Furious After Draw
“We lacked structure and organization in the first half”
Bayern were well aware that anything other than a victory at Freiburg would give Bayer Leverkusen a significant advantage in the race for the title. However, Tuchel’s side got off to a sluggish start.
Tuchel admitted that his team was slow to start in the first half. They lacked creativity both in possession and without the ball, which allowed opponents to launch counterattacks.
The second half was a total game-changer. We had some amazing opportunities, showed great spirit, and improved our discipline. It’s frustrating when a small mistake like not defending a throw-in costs us the win. We were so close.
What’s Next For Bayern
Bayern Munich will host Lazio on Tuesday in the return leg of the Champions League round of 16 fixture. The German side are hoping to make a comeback and overturn the 1-0 defeat they had suffered in the previous match.
Afterward, Tuchel’s team, who might find themselves 10 points behind, will be taking on Mainz and Darmstadt in the Bundesliga on March 9th and 16th before the international break this month.
