Bayern Munich: Chances of Survival Take A Hit At The Bernabeu in 2nd Leg

Bayern Munich star Harry Kane with the ball

Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena. In the thrilling semi-final encounter, the Bavarians were stunned by a late Madrid equalizer. They were already 2-1 up, but a late penalty from Vinicius Jr leveled the game.

This set them up for a tough encounter at the Bernabeu. Bayern Munich now has the tough task of beating the Los Blancos at home next week. Their record at the Bernabeu hasn’t been encouraging over the past 10 to 15 years.

Real Madrid have been known to be their downfall at any stage they met in the Champions League. And a loss at the Bernabeu has always been pivotal.

Nevertheless, the German side will fancy their chances of winning. Thomas Tuchel will hope his team drops an outstanding performance to help them scale the Bernabeu test.

The Bavarians will travel to Bernabeu over their semifinal 2nd Leg encounter. As it stands the Thomas Tuchel side will have to do the impossible. For them to qualify they’ll have to beat Madrid at home.

However, they could stall the game to a draw and hope to overcome the Spanish giants in penalties. Nevertheless, none of those options are easier than the other.

The 1st Leg encounter could have given Bayern Munich the edge they needed. But their lack of sharpness in front of goal landed them a draw.

The first half saw Toni Kroos punish the Bayern Munich defensive line with a through pass. Vinicius received the pass well, slotting the ball perfectly beyond Neuer. In response, Bayern tried to equalize, but they were wasteful.

However, in the 2nd half, an individual brilliance from Leroy Sane savaged an equalizer. And Bayern Munich became motivated. Soon they got a penalty after a foul on Musiala, and Kane made it 2-1 on the spot.

The Bavarians could have extended the lead, but they lacked the cutting edge.

Soon, Rodrygo caused some problems in the box, leading to a penalty. Vinicius made it 2-2 on the spot.

Tuchel’s View on the Game

Thomas Tuchel had a mixed perspective on the game.

He said, “We started very well in the first 10, 15 minutes and should have taken the lead. But then we strayed off our plan, played slower, and became more insecure.

“We conceded a goal, which didn’t make it easier for us. Nothing much happened in the first half.

“In the second half, we played better and more aggressively but then Real did what they do to all their opponents. They scored two goals from two chances.

“It feels weird, but the situation is very clear now. We need to win to make it to Wembley. It’s still a 50-50 situation.”

The Bavarians have had a total of 11 wins against Madrid in the Champions League. Most of this win came from the Allianz Arena. The Spanish side on the other end have 12.

The thing of dread for Bayern Munich is that it’s been over 10 years since they defeated Madrid in the UCL. During those 10 years, they faced 3 times. The best result Bayern got in those 2 legged 3 meetings was a draw.

They met 10 years back in 2014, and Madrid crushed them both home and away.

In 2017 they met again and it was the same story. 2018 was a bit different as they managed a draw at the Bernabeu. But this was to no effect as they had lost 2-1 at home. Now they are facing again after 6 years, with mostly new caliber of players from both teams.

The Bavarians would still fancy their chances of winning at the Bernabeu. It’s not impossible; nevertheless, it won’t be a cakewalk.

More tasks ahead

Bayern Munich will return to their league by visiting VFB Stuttgart. They still have 3 games left to play, even though they’ve lost the league to Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich will be hoping to end the season on a high note, by winning all remaining games.
