Barcelona Midfielder is Certain to Depart This Summer

Barcelona had experienced an unimpressive end to the 2023/24 season. Even though they had finished second, it was a bit disappointing. A lot of players had underperformed. Also, Major injury issues affected them.

Before the season, Barcelona had made some intriguing signings, with high expectations. But in the long run, they didn’t seem to be what they bargained for. A typical example was Oriol Romeu who was signed from Girona to strengthen Barca’s defensive midfield.

However, the 32-year-old former Chelsea star had failed to meet expectations. His performance had forced Xavi Hernandez to convert the likes of Andres Christensen to temporary Defensive Midfielder.

As it stands Barcelona is looking to sell Romeu this summer, however, not much clarity has been made over the decisions.

A lot at the moment shows that Oriol Romeu might leave Barcelona and return to Girona. The 32-year-old’s contract still has at least 2 more years on its name. The Spaniard had signed with FC Barcelona until June 2026.

But his unimpressive performance in the 2023/24 season has removed him from Barcelona’s plans in the coming seasons. However, as it stands, the technical body and the sporting direction haven’t yet confirmed his departure.

A lot of the dealings are being made with the Girona. And these dealings seem to be advanced. However much hasn’t been unveiled about it.

Hansi Flick on the other end will be expecting the club to make plans for another Defensive Midfielder. This once Romeu is taken out of the picture. The German would be interested in having a complete squad to access his options.

However, Barcelona’s no 18 is uncertain over his future in his latest interview with ‘3CAT’. This was an interview he had some weeks back.

“When I was 27 I thought that at 32 or 33 I would retire, but it is true that now I have found routines that have helped me a lot and I hope to last much longer”.

Girona’s Interests

Girona’s coach Míchel would desire to get Romeu back. The 32-year-old, who had an outstanding performance in the 2022/23 still seems to be a treasure for them. Romeu’s great time at Girona made Barcelona desire him.

And the Catalans envisioned him as a possible replacement for their legendary defensive midfielder Busquets. Sadly it didn’t end up as planned for the Blaugranas. Oriol ended his campaign 2023/24 with 37 appearances, for Barcelona. However, he only started 17 of those games.

Oriol Romeu opened up his view on his season at Barca

Barça comes with an offer on the table and tells you you’ll be very important… And then everything happens differently.

When I was on the bench, I tried to stay mentally in the match if Xavi wanted me to come in. If I did play, the adrenaline was higher and I couldn’t sleep if I lost a match. I didn’t like it from a physical standpoint and even less from a mental standpoint, because of individual mistakes and bad performances.

I value a lot what Busquets did but I didn’t come in to replace him. I expected a lot more from myself than people did

Romeu might have felt disappointed that Xavi Hernández didn’t put much faith in him. But at the same time, Romeu understands that the requirements for playing in a big club like Barca are high. Moreover, he hopes that in returning to Girona he can find his form back
