Barcelona are reportedly one of three major clubs closely monitoring Mason Greenwood’s impressive start at Marseille following his permanent transfer from Manchester United. Since joining the French side, the 22-year-old former England international has quickly settled into Ligue 1, scoring five goals and providing one assist in just four appearances.
Greenwood currently leads the scoring charts for the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola trailing just behind with four goals. Greenwood signed a five-year contract with Marseille, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2029.
Mason Greenwood is currently in Marseille because of all the legal processes that kept him tied up. Despite The Englishman being a great young talent, the things that took off the pitch weren’t suitable for his ambitious career. His being out of form for a long time and now finally making a return in good shape, draws a lot of interest from top clubs.

The French side paid £21.8m to secure his services, fending off interest from several top clubs, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. According to talkSPORT, both Spanish clubs, along with Bayern Munich, have continued to monitor Mason Greenwood’s performances, sending scouts to assess his progress in Ligue 1. However, Marseille is unlikely to let him leave cheaply, having tied him to a long-term contract and negotiated a significant sell-on clause with Manchester United.
While Barcelona and Atletico Madrid did not submit formal bids for Mason Greenwood during the summer transfer window, they could reignite their interest if his form continues. The 22-year-old has already demonstrated his ability in La Liga, having scored eight goals and provided six assists during a successful loan spell at Getafe last season.
If Mason Greenwood leaves Marseille, Manchester United stands to benefit financially from any future transfer, as they secured a significant sell-on clause in the deal that sent their academy product to Marseille. Greenwood is set to return to action on Sunday when unbeaten Marseille face Lyon.
How did Mason Greenwood End up Being in Marseille
In the summer of 2024, the 22-year-old parted ways with Manchester United, sealing a £27 million (36 million dollars) transfer to France. Greenwood has made an impressive impact in Ligue 1, netting five goals in his first four appearances.
Greenwood’s move to Marseille came after Manchester United informed him he had no future at the club, following his suspension in January 2022. His suspension followed online allegations that led to his arrest on suspicion of rape, assault, and making threats to kill. Although Greenwood was later charged with assault, attempted rape, and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in 2023.
During the legal proceedings, Manchester United conducted their internal investigation and initially considered re-integrating Mason Greenwood into the squad. However, after news of this decision leaked and triggered widespread backlash, the club reversed its stance and told Greenwood that his future lay away from Old Trafford.
