Barcelona traveled to France to challenge the French side Monaco. Hansi Flick had prepared his team for another possible victory. With his side having been in a red hot in the La Liga. Prior to their Monaco game, the Catalans had crushed their fellow Catalonian rival Girona 4-1 away. The win ensured their firm grip at the top of the La Liga table. So far, they’ve won 5 out of 5 games. Moreover, in the Champions League, Hansi Flick was hoping his team could replicate the same momentum, despite the increasing injury challenges plaguing the club. Unfortunately, the Blaugranas fell at the feet of the French side. Hansi Flick experienced his first loss as the coach of Barcelona.

Barcelona looked to control the momentum against Monaco; however, a few minutes into the game that changed. A flawed pass from Ter Stegen towards Eric Garcia was caught by Minamino. The former Liverpool star gets the ball; however, a late tackle from Garcia led to a foul. The referee handed a straight red card to Garcia for making a last-man tackle.

Down with 10 men, the Catalans lost momentum, giving room for Monaco to strike thanks to a beautiful finish from Akliouche. However, before the 2nd half ended, Barca pulled one back with Yamal’s sublime strike. The Blaugranas managed to finish the first half with a draw.

AS Monaco Vs Barcelona: Second Half

The second half was filled with a lot of options from both ends. However, Monaco looked the deadliest. But a good defensive highline from the Catalans hindered the French side from getting the better of them. Barcelona, on the other end, had their fair share of chances, with Raphina, Pedri, and Yamal. But they couldn’t convert it. Soon Monaco took the lead again, through Ilenikhena, after a quick counter wherein he was able to beat Barca’s defensive offside trap. He fires a low shot towards Ter Stegen. The shot hits the German’s leg before finding its way to the net. After the goal, the Catalans couldn’t find any response, eventually leading to Hansi Flick’s first loss of the season.

What’s Ahead for Barcelona

The loss is a big one for Barcelona, as they’ll need a considerable amount of wins to secure the top eight in the UCL league phase. Nevertheless, Barcelona will fancy their chances of getting maximum points from all the following teams. A big hope for the Blaugranas will be the quick return of their injured players. The likes of De Jong, Gavi, and Olmo will be strongly needed by Hansi Flick for him to remain alive in the Champions League campaigns.
