One of Barcelona’s biggest stars is set to undergo surgery as soon as possible, marking him unavailable for squad selection for at least the next four months. Not only is this a huge blow to the Catalan side who hope to redeem itself in La Liga after a poor showing last year, but it could spell long-term disaster for this talented player to get back fully fit and into the squad.
Barcelona faced disappointments last season when they failed to win anything. Arch-rivals Real Madrid took away the La Liga title from them as well as winning the UEFA Champions League for a record 15th time. This is added pressure for the Spanish club to prove a point in the upcoming season and not let Madrid win something again.
So, who is Barcelona going to miss until at least December — and possibly the new year? Check it out.
Barcelona Superstar Out Until 2025?
One of Barca’s biggest stars, Araujo, will be out until December – and possibly longer — depending on how his recovery and rehab go after a major surgery. Ronald Araujo will have to undergo an intestine surgery to repair a thigh injury that has been bothering him for some time now, ruling him off of the squad list and out of the team sheet until mid-December at the earliest.
Araujo had a hamstring injury in the Copa America quarterfinal for Uruguay, signaling to everyone involved, including players, fans, and pundits, that something was wrong. For a player of this caliber to go off in such an important game, knew the injury must be severe.
But the initial prognosis of being out for two months isn’t that bad when you think about it — ACL injuries can be as long as one year and Achilles injuries can be several months. However, the initial diagnosis was changed when he went to his club’s medical facilities to get checked out after the injury.
Barcelona physicians and medical staff have chosen for the center back to undergo surgery to fix the issue instead of waiting to get better. The defender now has to wait for an operation that will require a recovery time of a minimum of four months, which is nearly double the initial period of being on the bench.
Barcelona Injuries
Araujo isn’t the only injury that Barcelona has had to deal with both last year, this year, and in the off-season. One of Spain’s best players and promising young stars, Pedri, has had a nagging injury that has seen him out of the Euros and potentially miss the beginning of the season for Barcelona. Also, Frenkie de Jong, a talented Dutch defender and holding midfielder, could be out at the beginning of the year due to an ongoing ankle injury.
Gavi, a key midfielder for Barcelona who threads passes to the strikers and connects with the backline, is still undergoing rehab and exercises to recover from his ACL injury. The plethora of injuries and long-term absences will make it hard for Hansi Flick, who has to go into the new season without some of the best players on the squad available for selection.
Araujo joined the Barcelona B team back in 2018 and quickly progressed to the senior team in 2019, where he has gone on to make 107 appearances. He is one of the most veteran players on the squad, even at just 25 years old, so his absence would be huge for the team.
