Baltimore Ravens Sign 8-Year Veteran at Cornerback

The Baltimore Ravens get some secondary help by signing 8-year veteran cornerback Chidobe Awuzie to a one-year deal as he signs a league minimum deal. The 29-year-old has started 81 career games and has the experience to fit right in for the Ravens, who were lacking proven depth at the position. Since the Tennessee Titans cut their former free-agent corner, he won’t count toward the compensatory pick formula for Baltimore. Awuzie has a lengthy injury history, but when healthy, he can play on the outside with his size and speed.

Ravens Sign Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie

Awuzie essentially replaces Brandon Stephens, who signed with the New York Jets as a free agent. This signing is basically like the Tre’Davious White trade or when the Ravens had Ronald Darby or another veteran cornerback. It is a low-risk, high-reward type move since Baltimore doesn’t have a lot of salary cap to work with. They often try to get an experienced cornerback every offseason, and it has hit, but there have been misses. It is better to get ahead with a signing like this in case of any injuries at the position, especially at cornerback, where they didn’t have much depth before this signing.

Awuzie was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft and, after a few seasons, signed with the Bengals. He was with Cincinnati on their Super Bowl team and picked off Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. Awuzie left free agency and signed a big three-year deal with the Titans but, after battling injuries, was put on injured reserve and then was released.

The veteran corner had a pick, a forced fumble, and 4 pass deflections for Tennessee in 2024. He has a career 6 interceptions with the Bengals and Cowboys but is better known for his coverage skills on the outside at 6’0″ and 202 pounds. Awuzie has a career 66 pass deflections, including his time with the Titans, and has good awareness to play at a high level when he is on the field. He also has 4 other forced fumbles and a career 290 solo tackles, as Awuzie could have some flexibility and position versatility to play some safety, as he did play some at Colorado with the Buffaloes.

Final Thoughts

The Ravens starting corner duo includes star Marlon Humphrey and former first-rounder Nate Wiggins, but they were missing a third corner heading into this offseason. The players they had behind them include T.J. Tampa, who missed most of the season, and Jalyn Armour-Davis, who has been on the team for a while but isn’t a proven starter. Awuzie is the right type of player to sign at this stage of free agency and fits what the team needs just a month away from the 2025 NFL Draft.
