Baltimore Orioles Trade for 26-Year-Old Trevor Rogers

Trevor Rogers, Miami Marlins, Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles have been aggressive during the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline and have agreed to another deal. The team has traded with the Miami Marlins to get starting pitcher Trevor Rogers in exchange for minor leaguers Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers. This deal gives both teams a bit of a vision of the future, both immediate and down the road, so let’s take a deeper dive into what this move means for the Baltimore Orioles and the Miami Marlins.

What does getting Trevor Rogers mean for the Baltimore Orioles?

The Baltimore Orioles have now gotten a bit better as the team has added young southpaw Trevor Rogers. He has been doing a decent job, despite his record as he is 2-9 with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 105.1 innings (21 starts) this year. Baltimore has been trying to improve on the mound with their starting pitching injuries to keep ahold of the AL East ahead of the New York Yankees and with this move, they believe they are getting closer to doing so. Below is their projected starting pitching rotation now:

  1. Corbin Burnes
  2. Grayson Rodriguez
  3. Dean Kremer
  4. Zach Eflin
  5. Trevor Rogers

This adds a left-handed starting pitcher to the team after the injury to John Means. He is also controllable as he has two more years after this of arbitration and is only making $1.53 million this year. Rogers has been brutal this season with his advanced numbers and is pitching to contact with less than a strikeout per inning this year. He becomes a depth starting pitcher that can transition to the bullpen for the postseason.

Why did the Miami Marlins make this trade?

Connor Norby was the seventh-ranked prospect in the Baltimore system, according to Baseball America, so that is a major prospect haul. Kyle Stowers has had a cup of coffee in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles this season as he has gone 11-for-36 with one home run and nine RBIs. The Marlins are obviously looking towards the future and will not have to pay that much salary in the short term as they continue their rebuilding process.

This is something that can help after trading away Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees a few days ago and placing first baseman Josh Bell on waivers. The Marlins got some quality young talent as a result of this move.
