The Baltimore Orioles are gearing up for a three-game set with the New York Yankees and seemingly are going to be the top AL Wild Card in the postseason. However, they have sent one of their 2024 MLB Trade Deadline acquisitions to Triple-A with six games left in the regular season. Who is it and what does this mean for the Baltimore Orioles going into the playoffs? Let’s take a closer look.
Eloy Jimenez Demoted to Triple-A
The Baltimore Orioles have decided to demote designated hitter Eloy Jimenez to Triple-A with a handful of games remaining in the regular season to make room for Ryan Mountcastle coming off the Injured List per the team’s Twitter account. He was traded from the Chicago White Sox before the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline this season but it has not been a good time since being moved. Jimenez has appeared in 33 games and has a .232/.270/.316 slash line in 100 plate appearances (95 at-bats). His counting stats are not looking better with just one home run, seven RBIs, seven runs scored, and a 4:23 walk-to-strikeout ratio.
He was traded for reliever Trey McGough and is currently in the final year of his contract. Expected to be a middle-of-the-order bat for the Baltimore Orioles, Jimenez has not been able to get things going offensively. The Orioles have failed to find a consistent bat in the second half of the season and while Jimenez is eligible for the postseason roster, it seems likely that he has seen his last MLB at-bats for the 2024 season.
