The Baltimore Orioles sit in first place in the American League East with a 60-40 record so far this season. Baltimore is on track to potentially be a one-seed once again in the American League this postseason. The Baltimore Orioles were swept in the ALDS last season by the Texas Rangers. Texas eventually went on to win the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. If Baltimore does not want to repeat what happened last season, they need to make a move at the trade deadline or the fanbase will give upper management a lot of heat for it.
The MLB trade deadline is less than a week away and the Baltimore Orioles need to make some moves. All eyes will be on General Manager Mike Elias to not prospect hug and make trades for either a starting pitcher or a bullpen piece. They have a ton of bats on the roster. Pitching is the problem with this baseball team at the moment.
A few starting pitchers who could potentially be on the market for the Baltimore Orioles are Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, and Max Scherzer from the Texas Rangers. What the Orioles can not do between now and the MLB trade deadline is to stand pat. A lot of Orioles fans will not be happy if they don’t make a move to improve the roster. They have to have starting pitching and a reliable bullpen if they want to win a World Series title. Top prospect Jackson Holliday, who is a shortstop, will be off-limits in trade talks. Which prospects could they possibly be dealing in trades?
Coby Mayo Could Be the Most Likely Trade Candidate
Coby Mayo is the third-ranked prospect in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. It appears as if he could be the most likely candidate to be traded this year. Mayo has spent the entire season with the Norfolk Tides in Triple-A other than being with Aberdeen in High-A on a rehab assignment. He did miss some time this season because of injury. There appears to be no room for him in the majors with Baltimore. He has played first base and third base down in the minor leagues. His batting average this season is .305 with 22 home runs and 63 RBIs, along with three stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .385.
Samuel Basallo
Basallo is currently the second-ranked prospect in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. He is a catcher and a first baseman. Samuel Basallo is currently in Double-A with the Bowie Baysox. With Adley Rutschman being the catcher for Baltimore, it appears as if Basallo is going to be blocked and he might need to be on another team like the Detroit Tigers or the Chicago White Sox to get a chance to play in the big leagues. With Bowie this season, he has a .273 batting average with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs, along with seven stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .338. Samuel Basallo would have the potential to be a starting catcher in the big leagues.
Connor Norby
Norby is a second baseman and an outfielder. He has appeared with the Baltimore Orioles this season, but he hasn’t received enough at-bats in the big leagues to be taken off the prospect list on MLB.com. Connor Norby is the fifth-ranked prospect in the Orioles farm system. He has mainly played with the Norfolk Tides in Triple-A this season. With the Tides, he has a .297 batting average with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs, along with 13 stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .389. If Connor Norby was traded by next week, there is no doubt that he would be in the big leagues right away and not play at the Triple-A level.
