Baker Mayfield Is Very Optimistic About Buccaneers Offense

Baker Mayfield

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield started his career by being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2018 in the first round with the first pick. After four seasons with the Browns, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers in July 2022, then released and picked up by the Los Angeles Rams in December. Mayfield would go to free agency before signing with the Buccaneers in March 2023.

Baker Mayfield led the Buccaneers to a third divisional title and to lose in the playoffs against the Detroit Lions. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made some personnel changes to the offensive coordinator by hiring Liam Coen. Coach Coen and Mayfield worked together with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. With a new scheme and some new potential weapons on offense, Mayfield is anxious to see how the offense will run in live action. So, what is all the hype about?

More Movement

Part of the new offensive scheme is more presnap adjustments, with more movement on the line offensive coordinator Liam Coen predicts it will give the offense more advantage with possible matchup against the defense. This concept is believed to make it harder for defenses to grasp the notion of whether the play is a run or pass and not rely heavily on one or the other. Speaking of the run game the Buccaneers have been last in the league with the run. Coen looks to revive to run game with third-year running back Rachaad White and fourth-round exclusive running back from Oregon Bucky Irving.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added new personnel to the o-line, first-round pick rookie Graham Barton will start center and Ben Bredeson will fill the left guard position. Baker Mayfield feels the physical aspect of the offense is what was missing for the team last season. According to Scott Smith Mayfield had this to say about the offense,

I think our guys understand that that’s what we have to play with to be successful. When it comes to the running game, we have to [be physical]. Then our guys outside are going to play physical, as well. I’m going to keep going back to the run game, everybody is involved in it – the motion, the blocking down field, the differences in a 6-yard gain and a 20-yard gain. We’re really harping on those things to bring this whole thing together. We should be extremely explosive, but physical at the same time.

Unlocking The Secrets For Mayfield

Another plan the Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to make is to maximize the offense’s opportunities during games by giving Baker Mayfield more plays in the huddle to decide at the line after seeing how the defense is lined up. In the past Mayfield has felt lockdown at the line scrimmage before plays. This will give him a sense of freedom at the line according to the Bucs website Mayfield had this to say,

To be able to process that information really quickly is what he harps on in the QB room, of getting us into a good position, ‘If it doesn’t look right, get out of it. You have the power to do so.

The Bucs QB will have weapons wide receivers Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin at his disposal but the new addition may give Mayfield an edge on the field. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Jalen McMillan in this year’s draft and he has impressed the coaching staff and Baker Mayfield. So much so that Mayfield had this to say about his on the team’s website,

“I think he’s got the right attitude. He brings a lot of juice to that room. I think him and Sterling [Shepard] [are] a couple of little mighty mouses running out there, screaming at people and talking trash. It brings energy. Chris [Godwin] and Mike [Evans] are pro’s pros. They’ve been doing it for so long at such a high level that sometimes it’s hard for them to get excited over a touchdown, especially in practice. So, it’s good to see Jalen and those guys bring juice to it. For Jalen to enjoy football, bring a little pep to it, and just continue to get better and work on his craft is very important.”

Starting Squad Will Hit The Field

The Bucs and Baker Mayfield will be taking the field for the first time in the preseason against the Miami Dolphins. Coach Todd Bowles has sat a majority of his starters for the first two preseason games. Buccaneers fans will get to see the starting offense and how the chemistry will be heading into the season. Will we see the beginning of an era of offense from Tampa Bay or will we see a struggling offense slowly get things together throughout the season like last season?
