An interesting matchup between the US and Pakistan will take place today, Thursday, in Dallas, as the defending champions begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, will be leading his team for the third T20 World Cup. Pakistan has done well under his leadership, missing out on Australia and England but coming close to winning the trophy twice.
Babar Azam Leads Pakistan’s T20 World Cup Campaign
In 2021, Pakistan went out of control, winning five matches on the run before losing barely to Australia in the semifinal round of that year’s T20 World Cup. The next year, with Azam captaining the squad, Pakistan lost to England in an outright exhilarating final of the World Cup that saw pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi injured at a crucial point in time.
Pakistan head into the competition a little falling short on certainty, scratching an unremarkable 2-1 win over Minnows Ireland and losing to England 2-0 in a four-match T20I series last month.
“Babar Azam will trust that it is his third time captaining Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which began in the US and Caribbean on June 1,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.
Babar Azam’s Ambition for T20 World Cup Success
All-rounder Imad Wasim won’t be available for selection for Thursday’s match as he has been exhorted to rest by the PCB’s medical team, the board said. Imad Wasim had encountered distress in his right rib cage in front of the fourth T20 match against England last month as he batted in the nets.
“He is supposed to be accessible for determination for the June 9 match against India in New York,” the PCB said.
“It is currently my career objective and focus to win the T20 World Cup, remember those memories, and present the title to the enthusiastic people of Pakistan, Babar Azam was cited as saying by the PCB, crediting energetic Pakistani fans for remaining behind the team during “good and not so good days.”
The Pakistani captain forgot about the national squad’s recent poor performance, saying he and his teammates were “extremely confident” heading into the tournament.
Pakistan’s Approach to Facing USA in T20 World Cup Opener
It is the ideal opportunity for the enormous one, and I know every single individual from the side is restlessly standing by to begin so they can play their part and contribute to a strong and successful campaign, he said.
The Pakistani captain said he would follow a “horses-for-courses” strategy in regards to team selection all through the World Cup.
“In modern-day cricket, the concept and importance of floating players have become more critical than any other time in recent memory, and our players know about this as well as their roles and responsibilities,” Babar Azam said.
He said Pakistan wouldn’t trifle with the USA, lauding the team for beating Bangladesh 2-1 in a new bilateral series and overcoming Canada in the tournament opener.
“We will give them enough regard without being self-satisfied,” Azam vowed.
