Daniil Medvedev Stunned In 4 Sets As Elite Australian Books Spot In French Open Quarterfinal

Alex De Minaur

In a firecracker 4th round clash, Alex De Minaur overpowered Daniil Medvedev to become the 5th player to book his spot in the 2024 French Open quarterfinals. After going down in the first set 4-6, the Australian rallied back to dominate the world number four, winning the next three sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.

Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur won seven points from aces throughout the match. In four sets, Alex De Minaur produced 14 break points, converting seven of them. Medvedev produced 10 break points but was only able to convert two of them.

The Australian dominated Daniil Medvedev’s serve almost as much as the Russian, winning 52 of the contested points to the Russian’s 62. Alex De Minaur’s victory sent him into the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time in his career. It’s also his second-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal after the US Open in 2020.

1st Set Controversial Moment

Daniil Medvedev

In the 3rd game of the 1st set, Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur had played all the way to deuce when a controversial moment occurred. During a rally, Alex De Minaur hit a backhand to Medvedev.

After it had landed, Medvedev then returned it with a backhand of his own. De Minaur went on to return Medvedev’s backhand volley with a drop shot but Daniil Medvedev had stopped playing and was inspecting the spot the original backhand shot from De Minaur had landed.

He called for the chair umpire, saying the ball had landed wide. Although the chair umpire agreed with Medvedev’s call, De Minaur claimed the call had come late, since Medvedev had already returned the shot.

At 2-2 in the second set and on De Minaur’s serve, both had a short rally where De Minaur dragged Medvedev wide with a crosscourt forehand, then went for a drop shot to finish the point. Medvedev got to the ball at the net in time and knocked it to De Minaur’s far right corner of the court. De Minaur then went for the lob which dropped just inside the court to pull up game point.

Daniil Medvedev had the physios come out to treat him for blisters on his feet. This seemed to slow the Russian down as he lost the six straight games after that including four of the set and two of the 3rd set. Although he had a breakpoint chance in the 7th game of the 2nd set, good footwork and excellent net coverage helped De Minaur save it.

Medvedev seemed to bounce back in the 4th set. The beginning of the set was as closely contested as the beginning of the 1st set. Medvedev kept hammering at De Minaur with his forehand while De Minaur’s excellent speed and court coverage helped keep the game level.

Everything changed in the 7th game of the set with De Minaur at a single breakpoint. Medvedev served wide but the Australian returned the shot high enough that he had enough time to reorganize himself for Medvedev’s return.

De Minaur then hit a groundstroke that Medvedev returned a little too high for the Russian’s liking. With good footwork and a powerful forehand, the Australian dispatched a heavy forehand across the court to score the breakpoint.

De Minaur remained on top of Medvedev with his speed and movement helping him reach Medvedev’s shots all over the court. At 5-3 and 30-40 on Medvedev’s serve, the Russian hit a double fault that ended the match, sending the Australian to the quarterfinal.

Note

Alex De Minaur’s win over Daniil Medvedev sets up a quarterfinal French Open clash with the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune.
