Australia Captain Alyssa Healy Unavailable for Semi-Final

India's Cricket team suffered a tough injury. Alyssa Healy

Australia had successfully qualified for the semi-final without any loss. But now the Australian women’s squad is worried about skipper Alyssa Healy’s fitness ahead of their most crucial semi-final against South Africa on Thursday, October 17, at Dubai International Stadium. Healy had a calf injury while racing between the wickets in the group-stage play against Pakistan. Tahlia McGrath captained the team in Alyssa Healy’s absence in their last group-stage match against India.

Healy hasn’t been officially declared out of the competition, but she hasn’t trained since her injury, so it’s uncertain that she will be available for the semi-final. She was seen on crutches before the game. Healy is the second Australian to suffer an injury during the event, after Tayla Vlaeminck, who had to retire due to a fractured bowling shoulder. But on the plus side, the Australian team is more motivated to win the title.

Alyssa Healy’s Foot Injury Incidence

The 34-year-old declined to attend the optional team training session at the ICC Academy on Wednesday night. Her teammate Ellyse Perry has stated that their medical staff would give Alyssa Healy the best chance to participate against the Proteas in the knockout round on Thursday evening. With Healy out, Beth Mooney took over wicketkeeping duties, while Grace Harris was promoted to the top of the batting order.

Healy hurt her foot while running between wickets in Australia‘s win against Pakistan. She also watched the team’s last group-stage game against India while wearing a moon boot and sticks. Alyssa Healy was in terrific form before suffering an injury in the match against Pakistan. Before the unfortunate tragedy, she had helped with some rapid scoring, scoring 50 runs in three innings, including six boundaries, for 37.

Cricket Australia’s Confidence in Healy

Australia had retained Alyssa Healy with the team, hoping she would return in time to compete in the tournament’s final stages. Australia was taxed in their last group game against India, but they kept their cool as Harmanpreet Kaur smashed home for a nine-run win. Alyssa Healy was thrilled when she spoke to the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast this week, ahead of last Friday’s semi-final.

After three relatively easy wins to start the campaign, allrounder Ellyse Perry thought the challenge would help Australia face the Proteas. Australia was unbeaten in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka and New Zealand before overcoming Pakistan and India by eight points. Australia hopes to win the Women’s T20 World Cup for the fourth time.

Final Verdict

If Australia’s captain, Alyssa Healy, plays, an important decision concerning the XI’s balance must be made. They must decide whether to maintain Harris in the middle order to help the batting or to use Darcie Brown’s raw pace, who has only bowled one over in each of her two games this tournament. After a huge victory over India, they will face another difficult test against a potent South African side, which reminded them of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup final.
