The race which was the Cook Out 400 held at Richmond Raceway and Austin Dillon’s dramatic and rather controversial has brought a lot of discussion in the NASCAR world. Starting the race 32 points behind, his spectacular drive not only put him into the Chase but also created controversy among the drivers and fans. A race in which he took the opportunity in the last laps to hit Waltrip’s car has been deemed “unprofessional” and “chickenshit”, which provoked a discussion on the nature of short-track racing and ethics.
The Controversial Finish
Austin Dillon had not claimed a NASCAR Cup race triumph since August 2022, but his last-lap antics were memorable. At the end of the race, there is a twist where, for instance, he makes a risky decision that alters the game. As the field came around to the final lap, Austin Dillon hit Joey Logano’s Ford in turns three and four to send Logano spinning out. Far from being done, he then clipped the Toyota of Denny Hamlin on the rear and pushed him up into the wall. This form of aggressive driving gave him the advantage over the other competitors, thus, finishing the race ahead of them to claim the victory.
The aggressive end of the race angered Logano and his crew chief Paul Wolfe and Austin received some heavy glare from the team. Despite criticism, Richard Childress, his team owner spoke out on behalf of the driver stating that such tactics are par for the course in short-track racing. Childress argues that if the tables had been turned Logano and Hamlin would have used the same tricks on him.

Speaking about the incidents at the end of the race Richard Childress, Austin’s teammate, justified his actions based on the pragmatic principle that short-track racing is extremely competitive. Childress stated that.
Short-track racing is short-track racing. I’ve seen it more than once. When it comes down to the end of the day, any of these guys do what it takes to win the race there at the very end. That’s racing. It’s one of those deals that when it comes down to winning a race and you’re in that position, you’re hungry, you do what it takes. That’s what I told him (Dillon) all his life.
The eventful opening was preceded by an event between Ryan Preece and Ricky Stenhouse Jr that occurred with two laps remaining in the race that had 400 laps in total. Before the caution, he was comfortably 2. 227 points ahead of Hamlin, and Logano is now ranked third. Austin Dillon came in for tires when the pace car was on the track and thereby led the race when the green flag came out, Logano was second, and Hamlin third.
In the last lap, Logano passed the checkered flag ahead of him and with a substantial cushion. But there began the big shuffling for a position on the track and as they moved into the third turn, Austin made his great high-speed move that saw Logano and Hamlin out of the race. Indeed, in explaining why he had taken the call from Bellerophon to request to be moved to another post, he did not beat about the bush.
Conclusion
Austin Dillon has been much in the news after coming out victorious in the Cook Out 400, but how he overpowered Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin, with some aggressive last-lap closure techniques has evoked a lot of controversy over the right approach in racing. First, let’s talk about the strategies of he who has managed to earn the Playoff place, although his actions caused criticism from competitors and spectators.
Richard Childress supported Dillon’s actions arguing that short-track racing is more aggressive, but the reasons given demonstrate that arguments in favor of excessive aggressiveness and disrespect to other racers’ property remain a burning issue of NASCAR.
