Atletico Madrid can finally relax after one of their pivotal players has agreed to sign a contract extension with the Spanish club instead of looking elsewhere. The board at the club and the gaffer, Simeone, was quite nervous that one of their key players who they are currently building the team around could have taken another offer and headed to another league or team for the 2024-2025 season.
However, they can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Atletico Madrid star has signed a lucrative contract extension that is beneficial for both the player and the club.
Atletico Madrid Superstar Signs Extension
Atletico Madrid is a team full of superstars and key players, but one of their players is a portal to the success of the time going forward. The La Liga giants are in real contention to try and topple Real Madrid next year, especially with the likes of the legendary Toni Kroos retiring, and hope to do so by keeping their best players and bringing in more strength to bolster the squad.
One of the most influential squad members for Someone’s team is Alex Witsel, one of the top players in the entire Spanish league who is a central and pivotal player in the starting eleven for Diego Simeone this past year, and in the future. The veteran player might not have youth on his side, or years more to go, but he does have experience, technical ability, and incredible tactical awareness that younger players do not have.
He has proven himself time and time again as one of Atletico Madrid’s best players on and off the ball, showing age is just a number. He is fit, consistent, and reliable, which is exactly what you need as a leader in the back line. He is a versatile player who can adapt to multiple positions on the field if that is what is asked of him, which makes him irreplaceable for a squad.
Plus, he made 50 appearances in all competitions last year for Atletico Madrid, showing that he is fit, injury-resistant, and reliable for coaches to play him 90 minutes every single week.
But, the coaches were still concerned – along with Witsel – about how the other party would react to his current contract coming to an end this summer. There were many rumors that Witsel was looking to leave Atletico Madrid and go elsewhere, but the rumors were put to an end this Thursday according to the Atletico Madrid social media platforms.
Atletico Madrid Looking Forward
Atletico Madrid had an affair season last year, finishing fourth in La Liga. However, they hope to break into the top two and ultimately topple the Champions League giants, Real Madrid, from their throne in the 2024-2025 season. They lost out to Girona and Barcelona by less than ten points, showing just how close it is at the top of La Liga.
Atletico Madrid had a great end to the season, albeit one uncharacteristic loss to Osasuna at the end of May. Despite dropping those three points, they beat Real Sociedad, Getafe, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Athletic Club, Girona, and Villareal all within the last two months of domestic league games. However, big losses, like a 3-0 loss to Barcelona with a red card, shows they still have work to do in the off season.
