Atlanta Braves Reliever To Miss Rest Of 2024 Season After Hip Surgery

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher, AJ Minter

The Atlanta Braves (67-59) can not catch a break. As a team, they have suffered many key injuries during 2024. On Wednesday, the Braves lost a key piece of their bullpen for the rest of the season. Atlanta reliever A.J. Minter received left hip surgery in Nashville, Tennessee due to inflammation.

This is not the first occurrence of Minter having trouble with his hip. Problems originally started back in May. A.J. Minter was placed on the injured list back at that time. The good news for the Atlanta Braves is that they still have a strong pitching staff to finish out the regular season schedule.

A.J. Minter was placed on the 60-day injury list on Monday due to left hip inflammation. Since he had the same injury three months prior, it was time to resolve the issue with surgery. As a result, the Braves reliever will be out for the rest of 2024. It could be the last time that Atlanta Braves fans see A.J. Minter with the franchise.

He will become a free agent after the season comes to an end. In 39 games, Minter held a 2.62 ERA with a WHIP of 1.01 and had 35 strikeouts. In eight MLB seasons, Minter had a 3.28 ERA with 422 strikeouts overall. The 30-year-old was one of the best relievers that Atlanta kept in their bullpen, he stayed with the team for his entire career and also won the 2021 World Series.

Atlanta Braves Pitching Options

The Braves still have pitching options that can take the mound. They will need good showings from guys such as Max Fried, Spencer Schwellenbach, Chris Sale, and Charlie Morton among others as well. Atlanta goes through the normal struggles in their bullpen, just like other major league teams throughout the 162-game regular season.

Braves Postseason Chances

Any amount of help would increase the possibility of them making the postseason. They currently are seven games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. In their recent loss on Wednesday night to Philadelphia, only three runs were given up. To have a shot at appearing in the playoffs, the Atlanta Braves undoubtedly have to win games.

That includes securing the final Wildcard spot by staying above the New York Mets in the National League East Division. Unfortunately, other injuries have ensued for the Atlanta Braves. Third baseman Austin Riley suffered a left wrist fracture on Monday against the Angels. Gio Urshela signed a deal to replace Riley at third base.

Young contributors Ronald Acuna Jr and Ozzie Albies are not on the baseball field either as Acuna is working through another torn ACL injury from earlier in the year. Albies remains out due to a wrist fracture opposite of his third baseman. If Atlanta can string some wins together, things will pick up for the organization.

Fans are hoping that the existing players on the roster can stay healthy and finish on a good note. It seems to be a tough campaign with all of the current injuries that are holding the team back from reaching their full potential.

Their schedule does not get any easier as they will be finishing the series with the Phillies tonight and facing another divisional team in the Washington Nationals in their next series The Atlanta Braves will face the Philadelphia Phillies on Fox tonight at 7:08 ET.
