After week one, it is surprising to have so many injuries — but some players come into the season not at 100%, others are working back to full fitness, and some players get unlucky and pick up some knocks, strains, or long-term injuries during pre-season matches. So, how did Arsenal fair after their first game — and first win — of the 2024-2025 Premier League campaign?
Arsenal Injury Updates
Arsenal showed Wolves that they were truly one of the top three teams in the latest game this past weekend. Even though they had not played a Premier League game for months, they showed that their cohesiveness and togetherness remained even in the off-season. Arsenal came out and had a resounding 2-0 victory against Wolves, albeit letting them back in at some points throughout the match.
Even with some hairy moments, the Gunners claimed the fairly easy victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers to cap off the first game of the new season with +3, giving Arteta something to celebrate. However, there were other worries the manager had on his mind after the final whistle blew.
Declan Rice picked up a slight injury during the game, one that would be a huge worry to the manager if he was to be out for an extended period. Rice is one of the most instrumental players for Arsenal, as he is the midfield maestro who helps string together passes from the back third up to the wingers, like Saka. Declan Rice was spotted holding his right calf and limping off of the field, needing to be replaced by Jesus without being able to finish the game.
Even though this was a worrying scene to Arsenal fans, Arteta reassured the players and the fans that the limping was due to cramping in his calf muscles, not due to a long-term or serious injury.
In addition to Rice’s cramping, possibly due to dehydration, overexertion, or lack of fitness, Arteta also had to be concerned about Saka. Saka, the goal scorer, was replaced by Trossard, indicating to fans and pundits that he might not be fit enough at the moment to get through a full 90 minutes with Arsenal.
Finally, Arsenal showed the speed, tenacity, and skill of Jurrien Timber, a young player who has tons of potential in the league. He had a nasty injury at the beginning of the 2023-2024 Premier League campaign that saw him out of action for the remainder of the year. Now, he is back and ready to impress and earn a spot in the starting eleven. He came on for the last twenty minutes in the Wolves game and showed why he should at least be considered as a sub in future games — if he can stay healthy.
Arsenal Looking Forward
Looking forward, there are a few injury concerns that Arteta needs to manage. Tomiyasu, the mid-20s defender who is a huge signing, was unable to compete in the Gunners’ pre-season tour and has no expected return date. Similarly, Tierney suffered a long-term injury while playing with Scotland in the Euros this summer, meaning that Arsenal will be without their UK international for at least a few more weeks.
