The Reds started the game sloppy with an own goal from Jarrol Quansah. However, within a short period, they equalized with a beautiful header from Diogo Jota. The Portuguese did a beautiful interplay between him and Darwin Nunez, before finding Cody Gakpo, who also squared a pass to Liverpool’s new signing Chiesa. The Italian Acrobatics saw Jota’s header at the end. The first half ended in a one-all draw. However, in the second half, the Reds took the lead with Jota again after a beautiful run from Curtis Jones saw him deliver to the Portuguese a through pass.
Liverpool continued to deliver more damage as Mohammed Salah fired a rebound of Mac Allister’s shot into the far corner, beyond Fabianski’s reach. The Reds didn’t stop there, as Cody Gakpo fired a fine curler to make it four. The Dutchman also did it the second time from a similar position to get his brace.
Arne Slot on his team
The Dutchman was full of praise for his boys hailing their magnificent performance. He spoke about how hardworking they’ve been and the level of quality they all possess.
Slot said: “You already start to laugh because you’re thinking for two months I only ask about new players! I constantly told you guys how many quality players we already had. I think you all knew and that’s also what we showed in the last weeks and today again that we have many quality players.
He also added: “What pleased me most was that even if a lot of new players come in they don’t come in and try to have a good individual performance. They try to work really hard for the team. There was a lot of desire not to concede and as a result of that we had some good individual performances as well.”
Slot on Chiesa
The Dutchman also praised Federico Chiesa who started and appeared for 60 minutes. He believes the Italian is still improving and adapting. Chiesa who had not played for months, now had his first start capped up with an assist. The Italian would be pleased with the performance and hopeful for more to help the team.
Slot spoke about him saying: “It was pleasing to see that he could already play 60 minutes because I think I said in the last press conference he hasn’t played a lot, maybe hasn’t played hardly any minutes in the last three or four months. So, for him it is important that apart from getting more match fitness, he has to have playing minutes – and that’s what he got today.
He added: “He assisted, although it was a shot on target that provided Diogo for a goal, worked really hard and I think it is normal he is not already in the top of his ability. He has to get used to the club, he has to get used to his teammates, he has to adjust to the playing style. It was very good to see how match fit he already is so we can use him if we need him.”
