Arizona Diamondbacks Rally For Huge Walk-Off Win

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks made history last night with a gutsy win against the Milwaukee Brewers. In the bottom of the 9th, losing 4-0 and down to their last two outs, the Snakes were on the verge of being shut out in back-to-back nights. Miraculously, they plated five runs and went from defeat to jubilation in a matter of seconds.

Diamondbacks Shut Down Most Of the Game

The Diamondbacks had their star acquisition, Corbin Burnes, on the bump. Signed to a six-year, $210 million contract in the offseason, Burnes is the man you want on the hill after a tough shutout loss the night before. The former Cy Young winner looked good in his first two starts and was ready to make an impact in his first Chase Field debut.

On the other side, Chad Patrick, drafted by the Dbacks, kept their offense at bay. He ended up pitching 4.1 scoreless innings. The first time through the order, the Diamondbacks had four of their nine hitters reach base but weren’t able to capitalize. In three out of the first four innings, the leadoff man got on base. Despite all the traffic, Patrick pitched out of it every time.

The Brewers put two on the board in the 2nd inning. Rhys Hoskins had an RBI single, followed by a fielder’s choice double play by Joey Ortiz, scoring Sal Frelick. In the top of the 6th, Jackson Chourio crushed a home run to left field to extend the lead to 3-0. Burnes threw his hands up in disgust as soon as it left the bat. 100 MPH off the bat and 448ft into the Arizona night, Chourio had his 5th home run of the season. Some insurance came in the 9th with a William Contreras RBI double.

A Historic 9th Inning

The Diamondbacks had not been shut out in back-to-back games since 2022. Eugenio Suárez grounded out as the leadoff man, but that’s as close as the Brewers were going to get. Gabriel Moreno walked and scored on an Alek Thomas triple. The Crew brought in Reliever Trevor Megill who immediately walked Garrett Hampson. Corbin Carroll then doubled, scoring both Thomas and Hampson and suddenly it was 4-3. They were only down by one run.

Another walk, this time to Geraldo Perdomo. Jake McCarthy then tied things up 4-4 with a single to right, scoring Carroll. They then intentionally walked Josh Naylor to load the bases, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. supplied the fireworks with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field.

Notes

It was a tough loss for the Brewers. They shut down the Snakes all night, but Manager Pat Murphy’s decisions, although sound, let him down. Marred by costly walks, it was only a matter of time before Arizona capitalized. In a very tough National League West, the Diamondbacks are doing their best to stay relevant.
