Arizona Diamondbacks SP Merrill Kelly’s Injury Status Revealed Following 14-4 Thumping of Texas Rangers

Arizona Diamondbacks, Merrill Kelly

On Wednesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks concluded their quick two-game road series against the Texas Rangers. Toeing the mound for Arizona was co-ace Merrill Kelly, who twirled a 1-2-3 first inning before the offense posted three runs of his counterpart Cody Bradford. The Diamondbacks continued to cruise against Bradford while Kelly stymied the Rangers offense through four innings. However, Kelly’s outing hit an abrupt finish in the fifth, with the righty suffering an injury following a Leody Taveras leadoff walk.

Manager Torey Lovullo and trainer Max Esposito met with Kelly on the mound before pulling the 35-year-old at just 68 pitches. Lovullo clarified the injury following the win, with Kelly unlikely to miss time.

Following Wednesday’s win, manager Torey Lovullo began to shed light on starting pitcher Merrill Kelly after he left the game in the fifth inning with an injury. Lovullo clarified that Kelly departed with “cramping” and does not expect him to miss his next start, which lines up on the road against the Colorado Rockies early next week.

Kelly finished the afternoon, going four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out three. Relief pitcher Slade Cecconi took over for Kelly in relief, allowing three hits, a walk, and a run. He also let the inherited runner, who Kelly left, score. Nevertheless, Cecconi left the same frame with the bases loaded and two outs, but fellow hurler Kevin Ginkel escaped the jam via the flyout.

D-Backs Thump Rangers

In a game in which Merrill Kelly left with an injury, the offense provided all the run support necessary for an impromptu bullpen game. Arizona tagged Texas starting pitcher Cody Bradford for eight runs on nine hits, highlighted by a three-hit and four RBI effort from superstar Ketel Marte.

Meanwhile, every Diamondbacks starter reached base sans center fielder Jake McCarthy. Marte, former NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll, left-handed masher Randal Grichuk, everyday starter Eugenio Suarez, and rookie catcher Adrian Del Castillo recorded multi-hit games.

Arizona Get Set For Weekend Series Against Texas

Following the team’s two-game sweep in a World Series matchup against the Texas Rangers, the Arizona Diamondbacks will enjoy an off-day on Thursday before hosting the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game set. Arizona last faced Milwaukee in the 2023 postseason, winning both games of the Wild Card series.

With a San Diego Padres loss on Wednesday night, Arizona will move into sole possession of the top NL Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, an Atlanta Braves loss will boost the D-Backs playoff hold to three games.
