Arizona Diamondbacks Sign Middle Infielder Luis Guillorme

Arizona Diamondbacks Luis Guillorme

On Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks not only lost an extra-innings heartbreaker to the Tampa Bay Rays to secure a reverse sweep but lost superstar second baseman Ketel Marte to the IL with a reoccurring ankle injury. With Marte nursing the injury well before Sunday, the Diamondbacks called upon shortstop Blaze Alexander for infield depth. However, following an 0-8 performance in three games, the Diamondbacks will send Alexander back down to Triple-A Reno while signing a veteran infielder via free agency.

On Tuesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks made a significant roster move, sending infielder Blaze Alexander down to Triple-A Reno while signing second baseman Luis Guillorme. The Diamondbacks continue to work around an ankle injury to superstar second baseman Ketel Marte following his placement on the IL earlier this week. Arizona has used a combination of Kevin Newman and Alexander in the absence of Marte.

However, Alexander went 0-8 since his call-up post-Marte injury, including four strikeouts and three walks. The 25-year-old will return to Triple-A with a .247 batting average and .667 OPS. Newman will likely get the bulk of the second base opportunity with the loss of Alexander and the continued injury to Marte. Newman has played 24 games at second base this season.

Luis Guillorme: Joining Arizona Diamondbacks

On Tuesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Luis Guillorme to an MLB deal. The D-Backs have optioned Blaze Alexander to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Guillorme opened the season with the Atlanta Braves for nine games before catching on with the Los Angeles Angels. Guillorme owns a .218 batting average this season with no home runs and six RBI.

Originally a tenth-round pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, Guillorme played his first six seasons with the New York Mets. The now 29-year-old posted a .261/.344/.333 slash line during that span. He collected five home runs and four stolen bases while a member of the Mets. Guillorme has played at least 100 games at third and second base while logging 229.1 innings at shortstop.

Diamondbacks: Infield Depth Chart

With superstar Ketel Marte on the mend, the Arizona Diamondbacks currently have three middle infielders on their 26-man roster. Leading the way is former All-Star shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, who is hitting .280 on the season. Meanwhile, Newman and Guillorme will likely rotate at second base. The Diamondbacks also have Eugenio Suarez at third base.

The NL West club could turn to outfielder Lourdes Gurriel in a pinch to play a middle infield position. Gurriel began his MLB career as a second baseman and shortstop with the Toronto Blue Jays. He has played over 600 innings between the two key positions. However, he has not played either position as a member of the D-Backs.
