The New York Yankees bats erupted in both the third inning and the eighth inning to account for nine of the team’s eleven runs. Shortstop Anthony Volpe, of all the hitters in the Yankees lineup, started the avalanche of runs with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead that would prove enough to win Game 4 and close the Dodgers series lead to 3-1.
For good measure, the Yankees tacked on a run in the sixth before piling on with five runs in the eighth. Following the grand slam, Anthony Volpe doubled to left with one out in the eighth. Catcher Austin Wells walked. Alex Verdugo grounded into a fielders’ choice, scoring Volpe and moving Wells to third. With Wells and third and Verdugo at first, Gleyber Torres homered 366 feet to right center to put up a crooked number for the inning.
But the Yankees weren’t done. Juan Soto doubled to left and then instead of striking out swinging, Aaron Judge hit a single and collected an RBI. Jazz Chisholm, Jr. flied out to left and Giancarlo Stanton popped out to second and the scoring and the inning were over.
Anthony Volpe- An Unlikely Hero
Throughout the regular season, Anthony Volpe had produced offensively like one might expect a 5-foot-9 shortstop to produce. The native New Yorker and lifelong Yankees fan hit .243/.293/.364 with 12 home runs and 60 RBI. He scored 90 runs during the season and stole 28 bases while playing solid, if not spectacular, defense at shortstop.
In the postseason, including Game 4 against the Dodgers, Anthony Volpe is hitting .273/.407/.386 with one home run, last night’s grand slam, and five RBI. Four of which came with the grand slam. Anthony Volpe is not the player one would expect to shine on the big stage by flashing a power bat. But that’s exactly what he did last night and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Yankees Need Gerrit Cole To Shine To Send Series Back To LA
The thing about being down 3-0 in the best-of-seven series is that the trailing team can’t even it up with just one spectacular moment. A series full of great moments has to be strung together, night after night. Last night it was Anthony Volpe. For Game 5, it would appear that ace Starting Pitcher Gerrit Cole holds the key.
The 2023 Cy Young Award winner takes the mound in The Bronx with a chance to send the Yankees back to LA down just 3-2. In 22.1 innings this postseason, Cole has given up eight runs for a 3.26 ERA. In Game One of the World Series, he did enough to put the Yankees in a position to win, allowing just one run in six innings. The Yankees were one out away from stealing a game at Dodger Stadium before Freddie Freeman launched a grand slam into the Hollywood night. As great as that outing was, Cole must be even better in Game 5.
