Anthony Edwards Feels Bad Beating Kevin Durant In Playoffs

Who should be the next face of the NBA?

Despite advancing to the conference finals against the Dallas Mavericks, Anthony Edwards felt bad for beating Kevin Durant in the 2024 NBA playoffs. Edwards, 23, plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves as a shooting guard. Sports Illustrated recently posted on X, formerly Twitter, a quote from Edwards that read, “I’m not gonna lie, I felt bad a little bit. Only because he’s my favorite player of all time. I didn’t want to send him home like that.”

Edwards grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and played college basketball at the University of Georgia from 2019 to 2020. Moreover, Edwards’ professional basketball preferences have been the talk of the town. Here’s why.

Anthony Edwards’ Friendship With Kevin Durant
Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards has seen Kevin Durant as his idol since childhood. But, unlike most individuals with childhood idols, Edwards’ idolization of Durant became a friendship during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. And, before they became Team USA teammates, they faced each other in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. In that round, Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves swept Durant and the Phoenix Suns.

NBA analyst and former NBA player Jalen Rose recently asked Edwards about that experience with Durant at a Fanatics event. The 23-year-old responded, “I’m not gon’ lie I felt bad a little bit, only because he’s my favorite player of all time. I didn’t wanna send him home like that … It happened.” Edwards’ response is completely understandable, as no professional basketball player would want to sweep his childhood idol’s team intentionally. But things are bound to happen, and the Timberwolves advanced to the second round for the first time since 2004.

Edwards’s Fandom of Kevin Durant

Anthony Edwards’ fandom of Kevin Durant, who plays for the Phoenix Suns as a power forward, can be described as obvious. NBA analyst and former NBA player Kendrick Perkins once commented on the pair and said that he “wouldn’t be surprised if the two teamed up in Minnesota in the near future.”

Furthermore, Durant reciprocated the love to Edwards, as he previously commented on Edwards’ game earlier this year. The 35-year-old said, “He’s my favorite player to watch… I love everything about Ant.”

Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant Might Team Up

Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant’s budding friendship has been an arguably attention-grabbing headline in itself. But there’s a thought-provoking headline that might be worth thinking about when professional basketball fans get the chance, as Edwards and Durant might team up in Minneapolis as Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, as exciting as an Edwards and Durant team-up would be, there would probably be a requirement for the two NBA stars to go through a lot of hoops, especially Durant, who will turn 36 on September 29, before seeing a realistic possibility. Edwards’ rather commonplace idolization of Durant — and rather unique friendship with Durant — might be the best bet for the 23-year-old star.
