Another Minnesota Twins Star Heads to the Injured List

Twins

Jose Miranda has been a bright spot for the resurgent Minnesota Twins. Starting the year with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, he was recalled early in the season to replace the injured Royce Lewis. He has been a consistent performer at the corner infield positions and his future looks bright with the team.

The Twins were disappointed yesterday when they announced that Miranda had been placed on the 10-day injured list. They hope his stay is not lengthy and he returns quickly to the lineup to continue his assault on Major League pitching.

The Injury

Miranda has been suffering from lower back pain since Wednesday, and the Twins were able to backdate his injured list period to July 11. With the four-day All-Star break, the team hopes that his inaction will not extend beyond the 10-day period.

In a corresponding move, the Twins selected the contract of utility player Diego Castillo to replace Miranda on the active roster. The team will also have to make a move to clear space on the 40-man roster for Castillo.

Twins’ Miranda Has Had Up and Down Career

As mentioned in a previous article, Miranda has seen his fortunes rise, fall, and rise again during his Twins’ career. He burst onto the scene in 2022 with a 15-homer and 66-RBI performance that portended great things for the young slugger.

But the 2023 season was all but lost with a shoulder injury that forced him to miss half of the season. The once bright star now appeared to be an afterthought in Minnesota’s future. As spring rolled around this year, he was barely an afterthought in the team’s plans.

But barely a week into the season, the Twins came calling for Miranda in St. Paul. Royce Lewis had been placed on the injured list, and their top prospect, Brooks Lee, was also an early-season casualty. After starting out slowly, Miranda took the league by storm. The highlight of this period was a Major League record-tying 12 consecutive hit streak that culminated with an American League Player of the Week award for Jose.

The Twins were looking forward to Lewis’ availabilty so that they could have all of their ‘Young Guns in the lineup at the same time. There is still a chance that Lewis’ return from his latest injury will coincide with Miranda’s exit from the injured list.

Twins Wait

In the meantime, Castillo will play a utility role for the Twins. With Kyle Farmer and Miranda out of the lineup, Castillo’s flexibility will come in handy in the next week or so. In short stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he has played every infield position, outfield and even pitched two innings for the team in 2022.

All of this as they await the return of their two young stars.
