Angel Reese Makes WNBA History as Youngest Player With 9 Straight Double-Doubles

Former collegiate rivals Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese were drafted by the Chicago Sky Monday.

The record of most rebounds in a game or season could be filled with Angel Reese’s name. The Chicago Sky rookie forward is on fire as she makes WNBA History again.

Her outstanding performance against the Connecticut Sun made Angel Reese the first in her draft class to hit 100 Points and 100 Rebounds.

Now, the Chicago Sky faced the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday to lose by a 12-point margin. In this match, Angel Reese proved her worth as a rookie for the Chicago Sky with her performance.

Will Angel Reese become the 2024-25 Rookie of the Year?

Angel Reese’s Performance Against Las Vegas Aces

Angel Reese and Marina Mabrey brought the heat to the game, however, A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces team had the best of the Chicago Sky. The two-time defending champions who are now 9-for-6 in the league came out strong as the game progressed.

In the first quarter, the Chicago Sky started strong with Marina Mabrey knocking down shots from behind the arc. However, the Las Vegas Aces were still getting their feet wet moving into the game.

The two-time defending champions, Las Vegas Aces finally woke up in the second quarter of the game. A’ja Wilson commenced his 25+ point runs to support Jackie Young, who has been exceptional this season.

The Chicago Sky made some defensive mistakes in the second quarter and the Aces took advantage of those weak spots.

The Turning Point

The third quarter was the decisive moment for the teams are both sides were tied to the lead. The Chicago Sky eventually led with one point (51-50) to make the game theirs.

When we thought it was the Sky are back in their bag to dominate the game like in the first quarter. Jackie Young made a shot from behind the arc to put the game in the Aces’ favor.

The double-double queen, Angel Reese fought back in the fourth quarter to get her team tied to the lead. However, most times basketball isn’t a one-man team game.

The Chicago Sky needed to balance their offensive and defense play to outperform the defending champions. The game ended 83-95 with the Ace clinching their first victory against the Sky in their first meeting this season.

Angel Reese Makes WNBA History Again

The Chicago Sky forward, Reese performed a good defensive role despite losing to the Las Vegas Aces. The 22-year-old led the game defensively by grabbing 11 rebounds for the team. Six of these rebounds were defensive while five of these rebounds were offensive.

Sadly most of her rebound efforts didn’t convert to vital points that could elevate the team’s performance. Thus, the Chicago Sky players on the roster need to step up their game to amplify Reese’s performance.

In Reese’s last game against the Indiana Fever, Reese scored a career-high 25 points to give the Sky their first win against the Indiana Fever (88-87). She finished the game with 25 points and 16 rebounds.

Angel Reese’s Double-Double Streak

Her double-double streak started on 5th June in her game against the New York Liberty she finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Moving forward, the Sky rookie bagged a career-high 18 rebounds against the Dallas Wings to support her team’s victory.

Finally, in her first game against the Las Vegas Aces, Reese scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards to be the youngest WNBA player to clinch nine consecutive double-doubles. Also, Reese ties Candace Parker as the only player to accomplish this feat in a single season.

With her outstanding performance, Angel Reese was nominated for the BET Award for Sportswoman of the Year. Aside from that, the Sky’s No. 7 draft pick could have an edge over the Fever’s No. 1 pick, Caitlin Clark, if she maintains this great performance. Angel Reese is currently averaging 18.6 points and 12.3 rebounds making 49.8% shots from the field.

Final Thoughts

Angel Reese proves to be a phenomenal rookie. However, it seems most of the time when she bags a career high in either points or rebounds her team wins the match. Thus, this view brings up this question. Is it the team or should Reese improve her performance?

As said earlier, basketball is a team game, not a one-man game. Therefore, if the players improve their hunger for a win, they could outperform their opponents.

Angel Reese is a great player but her team needs to pick up their game to support her greatness. This same view goes for Caitlin Clark’s team. The Ace could dominate games because A’ja Wilson possesses good teammates who can dominate games on the court.
