Angel Di Maria Confirms International Retirement After Copa America

Angel Di Maria, a seasoned winger for Argentina, has announced his retirement from international play, capping off a remarkable 16-year career with the national team. Known for his speed, playmaking ability, and fatal left foot, Di Maria will end his international career following this summer’s Copa America in the United States.

During his international career, Di Maria has won major titles with Lionel Messi, including the World Cup in 2022 and the coveted Copa America in 2021.

Angel Di Maria To End His Career With the Argentina National Team

Di María, 36, who made his debut in 2008 and has 144 games with 31 goals, had previously said that he would retire after this Copa América. Angel Di Maria revealed he will be leaving the national squad after this year’s Copa America. He emphasized that this was his final farewell and that there was nothing more to talk about.

The Argentinean winger thanked the supporters and the younger players, recognizing their contribution to his collection of trophies. Di Maria acknowledged that he wasn’t ready to retire, but he also believed that the moment was right. He demonstrated his unshakeable commitment and love for serving Argentina by promising to give it everything he had on the field, win or lose.

According to reports, Lionel Messi thanked Di Maria for his commitment and that Argentina was lucky to have him on the team. He praised Di Maria’s unwavering work ethic and stated that it would be appropriate to retire following the championship match to honor his extraordinary career.

Di Maria was a vital component of Argentina’s recent success in addition to being Messi’s teammate. Their victories at the 2008 Olympics, the 2022 Copa America, the 2022 World Cup, and even the 2007 U-20 World Cup have been credited in large part to his efforts.

Messi Is Not Retiring Anytime Soon

Argentina’s star player, Lionel Messi, declared he would continue to represent his nation after Angel Di Maria declared Sunday’s Copa America final to be his final international match.

The football prodigy and superstar intends to ‘keep going’. He further dispelled rumors about his retirement by adding, I intend to keep living day by day without thinking about what will come in the future or whether I’ll continue or not. It’s something I just live each day. I’m 37 years old, and only God knows when the end will be.

This comes after Messi declared his retirement in 2016 after missing a penalty in the Copa America championship game. Seven weeks later, he changed his mind, and he has been crucial ever since, tallying 54 goals in 73 games. With victories in both the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 Copa America, he currently has 186 caps for Argentina.

Scaloni’s Desperate Attempt To Keep Angel Di Maria

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, tried to get Angel Di Maria to change his mind about retiring. Scaloni stated that he would prefer not to focus on the drawbacks of Di Maria’s exit and that people should pay attention to his upcoming games instead. He mentioned that the door was open for Di Maria to return, meaning that Di Maria could always count on him to be a part of the team in whatever role he wanted, even if it were just to be present or to work with Scaloni on other projects.
