Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili have a long history with Sean O’Malley. “The Funk Master” has fought Sean O’Malley before UFC 304. Both champions fought against each other in the Octagon at UFC 292. After fighting in UFC 292, the rivalry of the Bantamweight Champion and Sterling did not stop.
Sean secured a victory against them but they are now constantly in favor of a rematch with O’Malley. Merab Dvalishvili will be fighting for the Bantamweight Belt in UFC 306 against the current Bantamweight Champion. This fight has attracted a lot of fans because of its long history and its hot environment.
Tensions Between Camps
Because of their long history, both teams have been trash-talking against each and it has increased as the date of the fight comes near. The Coach of Sean O’Malley has been supporting Sean for a long time in every situation, but this time, things got intense when the coach started trash-talking against the opposing team’s fighters. Tim Welch is the coach of the Bantamweight champion, he trash-talked against the fighters, against which the fighters said that it’s not the coach who should be trash-talking but the fighters are the ones to do that.
Aljamain Sterling also talked about the situation in an interview. He supported his teammates in an interview with “The MMA Hour.” Tim Welch was a fighter who performed well in his time, but now he is a coach, and the trash-talking he is doing now is evidence of his past. Sterling said that Welch does not need to interfere in the fighters’ conversations. It’s common for the fighters to trash talk against each other, but the coach’s job is to support the fighter, not to trash talk.
Aljamain Sterling Being Annoyed
Welch broke his character against which Sterling said, “I think that’s all he was doing, was making it known how he felt. Like dude, your coach is your coach, your coach shouldn’t be getting involved in things like this and talking shit to the fighters.” The fighters were annoyed to see the coach trash-talking. They confronted him, but the coach claimed he did not do something like that. Sterling presented proof of that by saying, “Tim Welch, for the second time, said he wasn’t talking shit, but there is evidence that we saw, which is what got us annoyed.”
Aljamain Sterling was annoyed to see the coach interfering in the conversations, but he confronted him. He confronted the coach, but he also made it clear that he did not want to offend anyone or trash talk against some coach. He just wanted to make it known to everyone that a coach has a different role than a fighter, and that must be carried out; he expressed that by saying, “So I just told him simply, yo, we are not against you or anything, but understand your position in the game. I’m not saying that to be disrespectful or this badass tough guy, but there are consequences for things that are done and being said.”
Respectful Challenge from Aljamain Sterling
Aljamain Sterling showed a lot of respect towards his friend Merab Dvalishvili. He is trying to set up the environment and clear the situation for his friend Merab because a year ago he also had the same opportunity as Sean O’Malley, leading him to be a Bantamweight Champion. So according to Aljamain, everyone deserves the same opportunities, he tried to defend his friend by not disrespecting the coach and also telling everyone to play their role.
Aljamain Sterling prioritized respect and made it clear to everyone that disrespect would not be tolerated. When it comes to fighting week, we show respect always. But when people try to disrespect us, just know we’re going to say something. I think that’s all it comes down to”
