Alexei Popyrin’s Spectacular US Open Run Ends

2024 US Open - Day 5 - Alexei Popyrin

Australian shooting star Alexei Popyrin crashed out of the US Open after a fourth-round loss to American showman Frances Tiafoe. The No. 20 20 seed won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 in front of a home crowd on Arthur Ashe court. Popyrin’s hope to enter the second week of a grand slam for the first time can’t be realized this time.

Alexei Popyrin raised as a new star after he knocked No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic out of the US Open earlier this week. Popyrin almost made another positive result when he had a 5-2 lead in the second set before losing in a tiebreak and going on to lose the match.

Frances Tiafoe had a better run after claiming the first two sets as unforced errors and crucial missed opportunities crippled Alexei Popyrin’s chances. Popyrin led 5-2 and was serving for the second set, only to surrender his advantage and lose 7-3 in a tiebreak.

Popyrin fought back to claim the third set, but the 28th seed’s chances evaporated because of the two double faults in the crucial sixth game of the fourth set. “It’s a really big choke from my end,” he said. Despite enjoying his best performance at a grand slam, Alexei Popyrin left disappointed because of his missed opportunities.

Despite Losing to His Friend, Alexei Popyrin Has Hope

Alexei Popyrin had a great summer after he lifted his first Masters 1000 trophy in Canada last month. He even admitted that this title was way bigger than the day he defeated Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows. He also realized that it would be great to be able to stay on the second week of a Grand Slam.

“I probably would have taken it considering the position I was in. If I hadn’t won a match in Montreal or Cincy, I probably would have dropped to outside 90 in the world. So considering all that, I think it was a very successful summer,” he said.

The 25-year-old had entered the most significant match of his life. He claimed six top-20 victories in his previous eight outings, with none bigger than that of the 24-time major winner and US Open defending champion Novak Djokovic. Now, Alexei Popyrin is leaving Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson as the only Australians remaining in the men’s main draw. Both of them had to fight each other for a place in the quarterfinal.

The New Record Set for Frances Tiafoe

With his win over Alexei Popyrin, Frances Tiafoe had made a new record. He had become the first American since Andy Roddick in 2006-2008 to make the US Open quarterfinals for three straight years. Tiafoe joined Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Pete Sampras to mark the same record.

This tournament has so much meaning for Tiafoe, who reached the semifinals two years ago and then the quarterfinals in 2023. Tiafoe had the boost he needed the most to have a better result this time. “Seeing the Williams sisters win titles here, seeing Roger win a million times, I was like, I just wanna play on this court. It’s so iconic. It brings out the best in me,” he said. Tiafoe will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals.
