Alexander Zverev came out to start the third round of the 2024 US Open in supremely dramatic fashion as he came back from an incredibly poor start against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The late-night match at Louis Armstrong Stadium ended up being one of the latest finishes in US Open history.
For his part, No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev had some trouble finding the rhythm of the game early in his third-round match against unseeded Etcheverry. The first set was pretty tight, and after 62 minutes, Zverev was behind 5-7, with Etcheverry seemingly on course for a massive upset.
Finding His Rhythm
Even after a poor start Zverev never lost hope. Subsequently, he trailed 2-4 in the second set before finding his feet. As he adjusted his groundstrokes and mixed net play to add unpredictability to his play, Alexander Zverev disrupted Etcheverry’s rhythm.
Zverev’s comeback was gradually taking shape as he won four of the next five games, leveling the score at five. The second set was now a marathon, with one searing 14-minute game finally seeing Alexander Zverev land that key service break. He thus won the set 7-5, and the match was tied at one set each.
Gaining Momentum
With a renewed sense of confidence, Zverev won the third set. The unforced errors began to dry up, and he broke Etcheverry’s serve three times en route to building an overwhelming 5-1 lead. Zverev closed out the third set in resounding fashion, 6-1, showcasing just how strong and resilient he is.
The fourth set was no different, with Alexander Zverev continuing to put up a fight. One of the defining moments in the set came when he was down 0-40 in the sixth game. He went on to save the three break points, holding his serve to keep pressure on Etcheverry. He then broke Etcheverry’s serve and held his own to go up 5-3.
Serving at 5-3, Etcheverry tried to stay in the match, but Zverev was not going to be denied. He closed it out with a powerful overhead smash as he booked his place in the fourth round with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 result.
Alexander Zverev’s Late-Night Drama
Speaking to reporters afterward, Zverev reflected on the hard battle and said it was a great atmosphere inside the stadium. It was so much fun to play, he added. Alexander Zverev praised the 25-year-old Etcheverry for playing an incredible match and added that it was an extremely physical encounter. “I’m just glad that I came through and won,” he further said.
With this victory, Zverev has shown he is ready to contend for the title. The relentless German is resilient and able to come back from a set down and thus is an opponent nobody likes to face. As the US Open goes on, Zverev will seek to build upon this performance and continue in his quest for the championship. This comeback win for Zverev spoke volumes about his capability and determination. The late-night drama was a plus point for the US Open 2024, and fans are waiting with bated breath to see more of him on the courts.
