Alexander Zverev is one of the best players on tour to have never won a Grand Slam title in his career. The German sensation has gotten to the finals of the US Open in 2020 and the French Open in 2024, but lost to Dominic Thiem and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.
The farthest the world No. 4 has ever gone in the Wimbledon Championships is the fourth round, a personal record he equaled today after defeating British No. 2, Cameron Norrie, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6, in their third round encounter. Alexander Zverev will take on America’s No. 1 player on the tour, Taylor Fritz, in the fourth round for a spot in the Championships’ quarterfinals.
Alexander Zverev Defeats Britain’s Last Man
Cameron Norrie had a more dominant first set than Alexander Zverev, but couldn’t produce a breakpoint opportunity on the German’s serve. Norrie hit two aces and won all of the points contested on his second serve. He wasn’t so clinical in his first serves, scoring two-thirds of his first serve points. Zverev converted one of four breakpoint opportunities to win the set.
Alexander Zverev turned up the heat on Norrie in the second set with powerful forehands and backhands all through the set. The German kept dragging the Brit all over the court, occasionally winning some points with deft drop shots at the net. He rounded up a better performance in the second set with a wide serve and an overhead volley.
Cameron Norrie dragged Alexander Zverev to a tiebreak in the third set. At the beginning of the tiebreak, the Brit raced to a 4-1 lead. Zverev quickly woke up and erased Norrie’s lead. After that, both players stayed on serve till Alexander Zverev came up with a match point at 15-16. Cameron Norrie then hit a backhand long to give Zverev the victory.
With Cameron Norrie’s exit, all British male tennis players who entered the singles edition of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships have been knocked out.
Zverev’s Grass-court Season Vs Norrie’s So Far
Alexander Zverev opted out of the Stuttgart Open which had him seeded as its top seed to recoup after making it to the French Open final. Zverev had lost the final after five tightly contested sets. He was then seeded second in the Halle Open. The German made it to the semifinals but lost to Hubert Hurkacz.
Since starting his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday against Roberto Carballés Baena, Alexander Zverev has won all sets he’s played in without a single break of his serve. The German hasn’t faced a single breakpoint in his last two matches against Marcos Giron and Cameron Norrie.
Alexander Zverev’s match with Cameron Norrie took place on Center Court with several famous personalities present. Among them were Pep Guardiola, Roy Hodgson, Sachin Tendulkar, Joe Root, and Leah Williamson. The presence of Pep Guardiola particularly fascinated the German.
“When I saw Pep I got so nervous for a few games there. Thanks a lot for coming, it’s a great privilege. If you get tired of football, you can coach me any time.”
On the other hand, Cameron Norrie has been woeful in the last four tournaments he’s played in. He got knocked out of the second round of the Italian Open by Stefano Tsitsipas before losing in the first round of the French Open, Queen’s Club Championships, and Eastbourne International consecutively.
The Wimbledon Championships where Cameron Norrie won the first and second round matches is the first time he has won two consecutive matches in a tournament since the Barcelona Open in April.
Norrie lost his position as British No. 1 to Jack Draper after losing to Jack Pinnington Jones in the second round of the Nottingham Open II Challenger tournament. Jack Draper then consolidated the position after winning the Stuttgart Open. Norrie then faced and defeated Jack Draper in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday on Court 1.
“I’ll take it, the grass season ending like this. I felt like I played my best tennis at the end. Obviously it’s not the result I wanted today, but the level I played, the level of concentration, the way I was hitting the ball and moving. My body feels in really good shape and it was a really positive Wimbledon for me.”
