Pandemonium ensued, and Ovechkin was congratulated by his teammates, opponents, team personnel, and many more before an on-ice ceremony. At the one-ice ceremony, speeches were given by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Wayne Gretzky, and Alex Ovechkin.
Alex Ovechkin took the microphone to thank his teammates, family, fans, and everyone who made his goals possible. He even thanked Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin for letting in goal 895.”All of you fans all over the world,” Ovechkin said, specifically shouting out fans in Russia. “We did it boys. We did it.”
The Washington Capitals have six games left in the regular NHL season before heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Capitals are in first place in the Metropolitan Division. Now that Ovechkin is the leading goal scorer in NHL history he will go on the treacherous quest to be a 2-time Stanley Cup Champion. The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018. If the Capitals win the Stanley Cup this season it would top everything off for Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.
