Alex Albon qualifies very well in the Dutch Grand Prix races, but latest, his Williams car was disqualified due to noncompliance with FIA specifications. During the Saturday qualifying in Zandvoort, the Anglo-Thai driver had managed to qualify at position eight during the session while beating other leading drivers such as Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly in the Q3 session. Nevertheless, using post-session scrutineering, it was noted that the floor of Albon’s Williams was not compliant with the requirement and he was disqualified from the results.
Alex Albon Disqualified After FIA Finds Floor Non-Compliant
During the post-qualifying inspections, FIA found the floor of Alex Albon’s car to be a little larger than the size permitted by the rules of the sport. In particular, the width of the floor was found to be too wide as it extends 1600mm as per the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations. Despite Williams insisting that their measurements pointed towards the team being compliant, the scan done by the FIA said otherwise, and a report to the stewards was done.
The stewards’ report detailed states;
The floor body of Car 23 was found to lie outside the regulatory volume mentioned in Article 3.5.1 a) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations. The team did not dispute the calibration of the FIA measuring system and the measurement of the car, but stated that their own measurements have produced different results. The Stewards determine that the result of the measurement conducted with the FIA system in Parc Ferme is the relevant one and the due process prescribed by the regulations has been followed. Therefore the standard penalty for such an infringement is applied.
Williams’ Upgrades Come Under Scrutiny

The non-compliant floor was one of a series of changes Williams ran for the first race after the summer break at the Dutch event. The team had also designed new side pods and an engine cover as their attempt to fine-tune their positions in the championships. However, the improvement of the floor started to fail in several races culminating in Alex Albon’s disqualification and questioning the reliability of the team’s measuring instruments.
Due to Alex Albon’s disqualification, he will initiate the racing event on Sunday from the tail end of the starting lineup. This decision demotes all the drivers following him by one position of rank. Lance Stroll will start at the eighth along with Pierre Gasly, and Carlos Sainz’s position will be tenth.
In a related decision, the stewards agreed with Williams that Sargeant could start the race, even though he missed qualifying due to a bad crash in FP3.
In Conclusion
Alex Albon received a three-place grid penalty for the Italian GP, which could not work in Williams’ favor, this has been their major problem as they struggle to keep up with consistency in performance and technical issues. Given the fact that he was to start from the back of the grid and Sargeant had a tough time in Bathurst, the team is really in a spot of bother in the Dutch Grand Prix. It also illustrates how stringent measures and strict relationships with the regulations have to be followed to the dot in F1 because even the smallest variance may lead to disastrous consequences in the highly charged atmosphere of the sport.
