Alejandro Tabilo entered into the Mallorca Championships as the 4th seed. This gave him a bye into the second round. His first opponent was Alexander Shevchenko. At the time, the Chilean had risen to No. 24 in the ATP rankings.
He dominated the match against Shevchenko, saving all five breakpoints he faced, and winning the match 6-3, 6-2. His quarterfinal opponent, Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik, wasn’t as straightforward. Mensik was solid on serve, hitting seven aces across both sets of the quarterfinal, but the Czech’s double faults let him down.
Alejandro Tabilo went on to defeat Mensik in straight sets to set up a mouthwatering semifinal clash with Gael Monfils. Gael Monfils had been on hot form all tournament. The Frenchman defeated long-time nemesis, Dominic Thiem, in the first round before defeating Roberto Carballés Baena, and Roberto Bautista Agut to get to the semifinal.
Tabilo Wins In Singles And Doubles Semifinals
Gael Monfils took two breaks of Alejandro Tabilo’s serves in the first three games of the first set, then went on to win the set 6-2. Tabilo began his comeback in the sixth game of the second set, rounding off the second set with a double break to win 6-2.
Both players then stayed on serve all through the third set, making the match need a third-set tiebreak to decide the winner. Tabilo stayed composed all through the tiebreak, creating three match points and taking the match on the first opportunity.
Tabilo and his doubles partner for the Mallorca Championships, 31-year-old Diego Hidalgo, defeated the American partnership of Jackson Withrow and Nathaniel Lammons, in the doubles semifinal of the Mallorca Championships.
The Chilean will play in both the singles and doubles finals of the 2024 Mallorca Championships. He’d take on Sebastian Ofner in the singles final, while his and Hidalgo’s doubles opponents in the doubles final will be Julian Cash and Robert Galloway.
Alejandro Tabilo’s Near Wins In Finals
Alejandro Tabilo got to his first-ever ATP tour-level final in the 2022 Cordoba Open. The Chilean had started as a qualifier but had defeated Francisco Cerundolo, Carlos Taberner, Sebastian Baez, and the top seed, Diego Schwartzman, on the road to the semifinals.
He hadn’t dropped a single set in all these matches. The Chilean started the final like he had played the tournament, winning the first set against Albert Ramos Vinolas, but the Spaniard who was the tournament’s 6th seed, came back in the second set to force a third set. The Spaniard eventually won the third set.
In March, Alejandro Tabilo entered the Chile Open as the 4th seed behind fellow Chilean, Nicolas Jarry, Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, and France’s Arthur Fils. Tabilo was on red-hot form all through the tournament, dropping his first set of the tournament in the first set of the semifinal clash with Corentin Moutet.
Tabilo eventually came from behind to defeat the Frenchman before facing Sebastian Baez in the final. At the time of the final, the Chilean was ranked No. 51 in the ATP rankings. He took the first set of the final 6-3 before capitulating in the second set to lose 0-6. Baez then won the third set 4-6 to win the championship. After the final, Tabilo climbed 12 places to No. 39.
Tabilo Won Auckland As 1st ATP Singles Title
Alejandro Tabilo started 2024 with a title in the ASB Classic, the Auckland Open, in January. The Chilean was a qualifier in the tournament. He had escaped having to fight through the 2nd seed, then Britain’s No. 1, Cameron Norrie, in the quarterfinals, with the Brit withdrawing from the tournament due to a wrist injury.
In the semifinal, Tabilo then faced and defeated the 6th seed, Arthur Fils, who was then the world No. 35, ranked 47 places above Alejandro Tabilo. He then took on Taro Daniel in the final, his straight sets victory over the Japanese his third consecutive match without dropping a set or needing a tiebreak. The victory shot the Chilean 33 places up the ATP rankings to No. 49.
