Aleem Dar: A Tribute to a Cricket Legend

Adam Zampa

Aleem Dar, one of cricket’s most respected umpires, has announced his retirement from the game at the end of the 2024-25 domestic season. It marks an incredible journey through nearly 25 years. Dar is not only known for his strong officiating skills but also because of his amiable nature and professionalism on and off the field. Let’s take a closer look at his career, achievements, and what he plans to do next.

Aleem Dar has had the distinction of being one of the most influential cricket officials around. He has officiated in a record 145 Tests, 231 One Day Internationals, and 72 T20 Internationals. In his playing days, he was part of 17 first-class and 18 List-A matches for his team before he represented his country as an umpire. Aleem Dar soon shot to popularity following his impressive grasp of the game. He was a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires between 2003 and 2023, which is a showcase of the very best in the business.

Aleem Dar received several awards while he was working. He was awarded the David Shepherd Trophy three times consecutively, from 2009 to 2011, for being voted ICC Umpire of the Year. The trophy to him translates into consistent, mistakeless, and careful officiating of many of the history-making cricket games. So, he gets the respect of not just the players but also the fans for the calm and fair decisions he makes.

Fairness Commitment

Dar is known to be an excellent employer of players. He has been alive to the pressure put on players while performing in matches and has handled a lot of matters amicably. This has often doused moments of tension on the field, refocusing the spirit of sportsmanship. It is such a quality that has added to his popularity in the cricketing world, both in Pakistan and elsewhere.

On the day of announcing his retirement, Aleem Dar says he is thankful for his long career. He ensures that once he steps down, the rest of the time will be dedicated to social and charity work. In retirement, Dar said he’d like to mentor the next crop of umpires; he wants to give new officials a chance to grow and shine in the sport. This commitment to nurturing new talent is reflective of his dedication to cricket beyond merely his career.

The Future of Umpiring

Aleem Dar’s loss will be greatly felt. Still, his legacy will live on through the young men he mentors as umpires. And his and their experience can still be priceless for the game. Of course, it will be a real treat to see how these new talents take up the mantle where Dar and the rest have set the benchmarks.

No words can reflect the impact of Aleem Dar on cricket. His record, awards received, and commitment to fair play will serve as a benchmark for umpires across the globe. Cricket fans and players will not ever again be the same without him in his final season, though. Part of him, however, will continue being with future generations of umpires. With charity work now at heart, we wish him all the very best in this new chapter of his life. And finally, thank you to Aleem Dar for his wonderful service to the game!
