Despite His Victory, Alcaraz Described Sinner As a Beast

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner at the China Open.

After the thrilling final of the China Open, Carlos Alcaraz expressed his immense respect for Sinner and described his rival as a “beast.” Alcaraz clinched the title in three sets, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the Diamond Stadium in the Chinese capital. Both players produced some exquisite shots throughout a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes – the longest men’s singles match of the event’s history.

The 21-year-old described Sinner as a “beast” in all aspects of the game and labeled the world number one’s level of play “unbelievable.” Alcaraz stated the Sinner showed once again that he is the best player in the world. “It’s a high quality of tennis,” he said in the on-court interview after the thrilling match.

Alcaraz Leads Head-To-Head

With the win in Beijing, the Spaniard now holds a 6-4 record against Sinner. Alcaraz has won all three of his meetings with the 23-year-old Italian this year. The four-time major champion’s victory also ended Sinner’s 15-match winning streak, which featured title runs in Cincinnati and at the US Open

Alcaraz has now won all three of their matches this season, triumphing previously at both Indian Wells and Roland-Garros. It is the first time either of the duo has won three straight matches against the other. At the age of 21 years and 150 days, Alcaraz is the youngest player to defeat the world number one in an ATP event final after losing the opening set.  The Spaniard now holds an 8-1 record against the top five players in the world this year. His only defeat came against Novak Djokovic in the final of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Alcaraz and Sinner won two Grand Slam titles each in 2024, while the Italian has claimed six titles this season to the Spaniard’s four. But, Alcaraz might have a good reason to claim his rival as a beast. Sinner had won all six of his previous finals in 2024. He had not tasted defeat in a championship match since losing to Djokovic at the ATP Finals in November last year.

Alcaraz Will Jump To Number Two

With the title at the China Open, Alcaraz will officially overtake Alexander Zverev in the ATP ranking while Sinner will still hold a significant 4.000 point lead at the top. Zverev dropped to No. 3 behind Alcaraz following his China Open absence as he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

The 27-year-old has decided to return to action at the Shanghai Masters although he admits it will take a while before he is 100% healthy again. Zverev is the second seed at the Shanghai Masters and he is projected to meet either Sinner or Alcaraz in the final. The race for points might be tight if Zverev comes up with a good performance.

Alcaraz Got the Joy Back

Alcaraz claimed that he had got his love for tennis back with this dramatic win against Sinner. The victory was all the more satisfying following a disappointing second-round exit at the US Open, where Sinner went on to triumph. He credited his coaching team with the help to drag his motivation back again. “Thanks to them I started to get the joy back playing the matches, practicing, I got motivated again,” he said.
