Afghanistan Thrash Uganda By 125 Runs At T20 World Cup

R Sridhar, who coached India’s fielding unit in the past, has been named the senior men’s team assistant coach for Afghanistan. Both the forthcoming one-off Test match against New Zealand and the three-match ODI series against South Africa will have Sridhar in their lineups. Depending on how well he does, his contract may be extended.

Sridhar is a Level-3 qualified coach with a wealth of knowledge in coaching Indian cricket at all levels. For the Indian U19 national team, he has previously held the positions of assistant coach and spin bowling coach. The 54-year-old also served as an assistant fielding and spin bowling coach for the India National Cricket Academy from 2008 to 2014. The Afghanistan Cricket Board has also stated that they anticipate R Sridhar doing this duty well and possibly obtaining a long-term contract with the organization in the future.

R Sridhar Joins Afghanistan

The Afghanistan Cricket Board released the following statement: “It is important to note that Sridhar has been appointed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board as the assistant coach for the three-match one-off Test match against New Zealand and the ODI series against South Africa.” Afghanistan, coached by former England batter Jonathan Trott, will play a one-off Test against New Zealand in Noida on September 9, followed by three One-Day Internationals against South Africa in Sharjah beginning September 18.

Former cricket player R Sridhar played for Hyderabad in the domestic league from 1989–1990 to 2000–2001. In 2001, he began working as a cricket coach. Throughout his Hyderabad career, he amassed 574 runs in 35 First-Class matches and 69 runs in 15 List-A games. In addition, he claimed 14 List-A dismissals and 91 first-class wickets. In the UAE at the 2014 U-19 World Cup, he served as the India U-19 team’s assistant coach. In August 2014, he was named the senior Indian team’s fielding coach, and his contract was renewed.

T Dilip assumed R Sridhar’s place as head coach in 2021 when Rahul Dravid took over. In addition, he has held the positions of head coach for the Andhra cricket team, Tripura Cricket Association, and fielding coach for Kings XI Punjab. He also led California Knights to a third-place finish in the US Masters T10 competition the previous year. With 35 first-class and 15 List-A appearances under his belt on the Indian domestic circuit, Sridhar possesses a solid understanding of the game.

R Sridhar’s achievement as a coach has been noteworthy, especially in his current position as Fielding Coach of the Indian national team. Over 300 international games, including two ICC ODI World Cups and two T20I World Cups, have seen Sridhar as an essential member of India‘s coaching staff. According to the release, “The Afghanistan Cricket Board hopes to have a long-term contract with R Sridhar in the future and wishes Sridhar fills the role effectively.” The Indian will miss Afghanistan’s three-match ODI series against South Africa as well as the country’s one-off Test match against New Zealand.
