Afghanistan Commits to PCB of Participation in 2025 Champions Trophy

ICC meeting with Afghanistan and Pakistan

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Chairman Mirwais Ashraf and CEO Naseeb Khan journeyed to Colombo for the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s annual Board Meeting. Pakistan wants to host the 2025 Trophy in its home country but its neighboring country India doesn’t want that to happen. Especially for this reason the ICC decided to have a grand meeting which will be held in Colombo. The main purpose of this meeting was to decide whether the 2025 Trophy Championship will take place in Pakistan in its entirety.

Chances of Multiple Decisions by ICC

There were two ways to make this Championship happen. The first decision was whether the Championship would take place in Pakistan or whether it would take place partially in Pakistan. Pakistan insists on hosting the Championship in its entirety in its home Country. India was not happy with this decision that Pakistan would host the Championship. So the Indian authorities raised many questions. One of the main reasons for India raising questions was the security problem for the Indian team in Pakistan. The Indian team was in the process of deciding if they should allow their team to go to Pakistan or not and its reason was clear.

As a result, the ICC decided to have a grand meeting in Colombo. All the board members had to join the meeting and decide the places where the matches would take place. This meeting included the PCB members, BCCI members, and also the ACB members. In Colombo the grand meeting took place and there they discussed with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The Chairman of PCB Mohsin Naqvi joined the grand meeting of ICC. There are political clashes between the countries Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan which leads to security problems in each other’s countries. But unlike India, Afghanistan decided to change things. During this meeting, ACB representatives confirmed Afghanistan’s commitment to participating in the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in February and March.

PCB and BCCI not Coming to a Solution

The PCB and ICC had some chances that ACB like the Indian team would back off from the tournament but they shocked everybody by doing quite the opposite. They completely rejected the chances that Afghanistan might withdraw from the tournament. The ACB cleared their intentions of joining the Championship without any hesitation in Pakistan. They showed their eagerness to participate in the Champions Trophy.

The meeting was to solve the problem of Pakistan and India coming on the same pitch for cricket. But the environment was quite different from what was expected. As the Chairman of the board and secretary of BCCI, they were expected to solve this problem but from the exchange of words, it’s clear that it would be hard to solve this problem. During the ICC meeting, PCB Chairman Naqvi also had an informal conversation with BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, though there were no official discussions about a bilateral series.

On the other side, Afghanistan decides to move on and start different events for its neighboring countries to come on the same pitch for the cricket match. In a press release, the ACB mentioned that the talks also included plans for A team tours to Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, with specifics on dates and locations to be announced later. Furthermore, the ACB disclosed intentions to possibly arrange a Youth Tri-Series featuring Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the coming months.
