Adam Zampa Aiming Return to Test Cricket

Adam Zampa

Adam Zampa has been an integral part of Australia’s limited-overs teams, and he is now eyeing a comeback in Test cricket. While it had seemed he was focusing the most on limited-overs formats over the last few years, Zampa had not entirely given up on the dream of donning the famous Baggy Green cap again. While now established in the white-ball formats, Zampa’s feat of becoming the red-ball spinner from Australia on subcontinent tours.

Adam Zampa Still Aspires for Test Cricket

The last time Zampa came close to making it into the Test set-up was last year when Australia was touring India. The selectors had gone with Mitchell Swepson ahead of him. His aspirations were thus dealt another blow, but it hasn’t affected his ambition. He remains confident and hopeful that, at some point or another, he will represent Australia in Test cricket. Zampa described the chance he had in his mind of making it in Test cricket.

But Zampa, naturally, believes different playing conditions, more red-ball cricket, and an ability to rediscover his form would tell a different story about where his game is at for tests. He has played just two games in any first-class competition since 2019, but he doesn’t lack faith in his ability to succeed in the multi-day format. Zampa has focused on white-ball cricket of late and thus limited his first-class contests. Since returning to New South Wales in 2020 after a seven-year stint with South Australia. He currently has a bowling average of 46.98.

Zampa Focused on Test Cricket After Setbacks

On the other hand, looking ahead, Zampa’s aspiration to play in Tests might take a realistic shape with Australia’s upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka. This is a series that could well offer him an opening, especially with the selectors likely to think of anything from a drifting, slow left-arm to a conventional offspinner when considering options other than Nathan Lyon.

His experience and recent form could be invaluable. Zampa, too, knows that scrutiny might be eyed towards his Test ambitions. Knowing his first-class record, he admitted, People will say my record isn’t good enough.  After withdrawing from the IPL and MLC amid the revelry of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup win this year, he has committed solely to cricket by penning a two-year central contract with Cricket Australia.

Aims for Test Return after T20 Success

Meanwhile, Zampa keeps on excelling in the T20 format. Right now, he is doing well in The Hundred with Oval Invincibles, for which he is among the best wicket-takers. His recording in T20—as the only Australian men’s bowler with more than 100 T20I wickets—says volumes about the kind of talent and commitment Zampa holds.

As Zampa readies for Australia’s upcoming tour of the UK, featuring T20s against Scotland and England and five one-day internationals, he is hopeful his dreams come true with his appearance again in Test cricket. He means business this time around, and that is why, although it is a long road ahead, Zampa is restless and focused until the goal is finally achieved for him to don the whites again.
