Swedish player Adam Larsson has agreed to a four-year extension with the Seattle Kraken for $21 million, with an average annual value of $5.25 million. After spending three years with Seattle, and approaching the final year of his contract, the team decided to lock him down for another four years.
Adam Larsson Early Career

Born in Skellefteå, Sweden, Larsson’s extracurricular activities often included hockey. His father played professional puck for nine years, therefore the skills of the sport were easily passed down. At the age of 17, Larsson gained 17 points from 49 games with the Swedish Elite League. He also had a skate in the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship for his team. They finished in third place. The New Jersey Devils selected Adam Larsson as the fourth overall pick during the 2011 NHL Draft.
Nicknamed “Big Cat” Larsson quickly transitioned into the New Jersey Devils. After being with the Devils for five years, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers on June 29, 2016. With a seemingly stagnant career in regards to points each season with the Oilers, the Kraken snagged Larsson during the Expansion Draft on July 21, 2021.
Larsson and The Kraken
As soon as Larsson joined the Kraken line on the ice, his points took a significant uptick from the previous few seasons. His time on the ice also immediately increased. During his first season with the Kraken, Larsson obtained 25 points (an increase of 15 points compared to his last season with the Edmonton Oilers). His time on the ice per game (TOI) average for the Oilers during the 2020-2021 season and the Kraken during the 2021-2022 season increased by two minutes and thirty-eight seconds.
Kraken was putting Larsson on more shifts, and he was rising to the occasion. “Big Cat” Larsson has a reputation for being brutal in the corner. Kraken General Manager Ron Francis referred to his defensive battles, stating that Larsson is “…not a guy that other players like to play against.”
Adam Larsson stayed committed to the Kraken, being an alternate captain for the club since his first season and only missing one game in three seasons with Seattle. The absence is due to his girlfriend giving birth to their daughter, Alba. Larsson has grown roots with the Kraken over the last few years, and it shows.
Kraken and Larsson
Signing Adam Larsson for another four-year extension could be one of the best power-play moves Seattle could have made in the approach to the upcoming season. Larsson has had an impressive career but has excelled and proved consistently his true worth with the Seattle Kraken. In the final year of Adam Larsson’s contract, the Kraken could not risk losing the defensemen. Suffice it to say that many have high hopes for Adam Larsson’s performance in the next few years with such a fitting team for the player.
